Alexia Putellas has won Ballon d’Or 2021 after starring role in Barcelona’s treble-winning season
Alexia won the Women’s Champions League with Barcelona, the Women’s Primera Division and the Copa de la Reina last season.
Fran Kirby came in 10th, with Chelsea team-mate Jessie Fleming in ninth. Another Chelsea star was seventh in Pernille Harder, with Arsenal’s free-scoring Vivianne Miedema in fourth.
Sam Kerr, of Chelsea and Australia, came third – Alexia’s Barcelona team-mate Jennifer Hermoso was the runner-up.
Putellas becomes the third winner of the Ballon d’Or Feminin after Ada Hegerberg in 2018 and Megan Rapinoe in 2019.
Excited Alexia Putellas said, “I’m very emotional, it’s a very special moment. It’s special to have my teammates here after all we’ve achieved.
“It’s an individual award but it’s a collective achievement – I hope you all see it that way.â€
She defeated England’s Fran Kirby and Ellen White among others.
Ellen White shone for England, Team GB and Manchester City in 2021.
Kirby is one of five Chelsea players nominated after they won the Women’s Super League and League Cup in 2021, while they also reached their first Champions League final.
Chelsea were beaten in that final by Barcelona, and four members of the Catalans’ victorious side are included on the shortlist.
White, who starred at the Tokyo Summer Olympics for Team GB with six goals, scored 15 times in 32 appearances for City last season, helping Gareth Taylor’s side to the 2019/20 Women’s FA Cup.
Alongside the City forward, there are six other FA Women’s Super League players included in the Ballon d’Or shortlist: Chelsea quintet Magdalena Eriksson, Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder, Jessie Fleming, and Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema.
