Champions League: Demba Ba reveals Courtois’ penalty secret to Messi ahead of second leg
Former Chelsea striker, Demba Ba has revealed why Lionel Messi could not fire past Thibaut Courtois from the spot kick during Paris Saint-Germain’s slim win over Real Madrid on Tuesday. PSG managed to beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s 94th minute strike. And Messi had the best opportunity to put the French side ahead when a penalty was awarded to Kylian Mbappe just after the hour mark. But Messi missed the chance as Thibaut Courtois was equal to the shot, saving to his bottom right. It was Messi’s fifth penalty miss in the Champions League from 23 attempts. Ba believes it could have been so different for Messi though, had he done his research. “Just for info, an analysis done by the guys of Chelsea in 2014 before the semi-final of Champions League showed us that Courtois always dives on the cross side of the strike,” Ba tweeted. Messi will return to Spain with PSG on March 9 for the second leg of the round of sixteen clash at the familiar Santiago Bernabeu.
