Deborah: HEKAN President, Kiri reacts, condemns killing of student
President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN), Dr. Amos G. Kiri, on Saturday, condemned the gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel Yakubu in Sokoto State over alledged blasphemy, just as he warned against provocative statements
DAILY POST reported that Deborah, a 200-level Home Economics Student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was burnt alive by some students on Thursday, May 12, 2022, over alleged blasphemy.
Kiri, in a statement on Saturday, said the leadership of the church received the bad news with deep shock.
He called on the security agencies and the authorities concerned to intensify efforts in arresting all persons involved in the gruesome killing of the innocent girl and bring them to justice.
He pleaded with Nigerians to “be vigilant going forward, protect one another in love and avoid all sorts of provocative statements that will lead to religious arguments or conflicts,” warning that
with about eight months to the nation’s general elections, “all hands must be on deck to ensure unity and love among citizens, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, tribal or political differences.”
He expressed pain that the unfortunate incident is coming at a time Nigeria was facing challenges, especially with the spate of Insecurity in most parts of the country, even as he prayed the Lord to comfort the entire family of the deceased and grant them the fortitude to bear the big loss
