EPL: Don’t expect Premier League title – Neville warns Man United fans after Ten Hag’s appointment
Gary Neville has told Manchester United fans not to expect too much from their new manager Erik ten Hag this season
Erik ten Hag was confirmed as the Red Devils’ next boss on Thursday, after weeks of speculations around Europe.
The Dutch will take over from interim manager, Ralf Rangnick at the end of the current campaign after signing a three and half year contract at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s struggles continued this season despite sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replacing him with Rangnick and they are currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, with a very slim chance of finishing top four and qualifying for the Champions League.
Ten Hag is expected to get massive support from the Manchester United hierarchy to overhaul the club, which means allowing some players to leave and investing in some new faces.
But notwithstanding, Nevile said it is not going to be a rocket science, but believes the Dutchman should hit the ground running just like Thomas Tuchel did when he took over at Chelsea in 2019, guiding them to the Champions League victory.
“No one is expecting them to win the title next season but Manchester United shouldn’t be in a position where they’re fighting for a top-four position,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“With the money they spend and the calibre of club they are, they should be cemented in the top four, looking to challenge the top two.
“It didn’t take long for Thomas Tuchel to turn things around when he came to Chelsea. This idea of four or five years to turn a club around, Manchester United don’t need that,” he said.
