EPL: I fear for you – Carragher tells Mikel Arteta after Arsenal 2-0 defeat to Newcastle
Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher has said he fears for Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta next season following their disappointing run at the end of this campaign.
Mikel Arteta had after the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday night said he can no longer defend his players.
The defeat put Tottenham in the driving seat to qualify for a Champions League place.
The loss at St James’ Park means Arsenal are two points behind their north London rivals, with one game remaining.
The Gunners host Everton on the final day and require Tottenham to lose against Norwich City on Sunday
Carragher was highly critical of Arsenal’s performance at St James’ Park on Monday night as Newcastle dominated possession from the outset and beat the Gunners 2-0.
The former Liverpool star noted that Arsenal are not among the four best in England.
“I fear for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta next season,” the former Premier League star told Sky Sports.
“I think it is going to be tough for him. This is Arteta’s first job so he doesn’t really have that belief behind him.
“Arteta has never done it before [won the league like Antonio Conte did at Chelsea and Inter Milan]. That is not a criticism, it is just a fact. He needed that tonight.
“I really fear for him next season and if Arsenal are seventh or eighth at Christmas time with them in the Europa League there is going to be massive pressure on his job.”
