Rohr owed Eight Months Salaries

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is owed eight months salaries by the Nigeria Football Federation, PUNCH Sports Extra reports. The Franco-German, who helped qualify the Eagles for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, was last paid in February by his employers. Rohr, who is reportedly paid $45,000 as monthly salary, pays the team’s video analyst, chief scout as well as the fitness and goalkeeper trainers from his wages, it was learnt. Our correspondent also gathered that Rohr’s delayed salaries would be paid in naira as stipulated in the new two-year contract extension he signed in 2020. It was also learnt that Rohr’s backroom staffs (the team’s video analyst, chief scout as well as fitness and goalkeeper trainers) were yet to receive their bonuses for the win against Cape Verd...

AFCON 2022 draw: Gernot Rohr names two countries he wants Nigeria to avoid

Head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has named two countries he wants his team to avoid when the Confederation of African Football, CAF, announces the draw for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON. Rohr said he wants Nigeria to avoid Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire, adding that none of the six seeded teams would wish to have either of both countries. The draw has been scheduled for the Yaounde Conference Centre in Cameroon at 18h00 GMT today. Nigeria is one of the six seeded teams, including hosts Cameroon, defending champions Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia and Morocco. “I have had good conversations also with my colleagues,” Rohr told NationSport. “Every one of the top 6 wants to avoid Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire. “But we will accept and respect all the tea...

South Africa Failed To Qualify For The 2022 AFCON After A 2-0 Lose To Sudan

Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-0 loss to Sudan in the final qualifier match of Group C on Sunday evening. Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki made four changes, with Thabang Monare, Ben Motshwari, Lebohang Maboe and Luther Singh all drafted into the line-up. Bafana had a horrible start as they were on back foot from the fifth minute after Saifeldin Bakhit gave Sudan the lead with a towering header. Ntseki's charges were getting a lot of chances after that but they could not bury them, with the Sudanese shot-stopper also on top of his game. Bafana were caught on a counter-attack in the 32nd minute as Mohamed Abdel Raman went on a run from the wing, burst his way inside the box and fired a powerful strike past goalkeper Ronwen Williams at ...

Nigeria vs Lesotho: NFF suspects foul play, to conduct another COVID-19 test on Iwobi

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will carry out another COVID-19 test for Everton forward, Alex Iwobi. Iwobi tested positive on arrival at Porto Novo ahead of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Benin Republic in a 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. He immediately left camp and returned to Lagos to self-isolate. Iwobi would, however, undergo another test, to confirm if it was just a ploy by the Beninoise to demoralise the Super Eagles. If he tests negative, the former Arsenal man will be part of the Lesotho game on Tuesday. Gernot Rohr’s men have already qualified for next year’s tournament.

Benin Republic vs Nigeria: Onuachu’s late Header Seals Super Eagles Win

Nigeria ended Benin Republic’s eight-year unbeaten run at home, when they completed the double over their West African rivals, in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series. Paul Onuachu’s late header clinched a 1-0 win in Porto Novo on Saturday. The Super Eagles had come from a goal down last year to beat the Squirrels 2-1. However, away from home, Gernot Rohr’s men found it tough, until the final moments of the game. The three-time African champions had already qualified for the tournament before kick-off, thanks to Lesotho’s goalless draw with Sierra Leone earlier in the day. With one round of fixtures left, Nigeria lead Group with 11 points, four more than Benin. Sierra Leone have four points, while Lesotho are bottom with three. The Eagles host Lesotho i...

Super Eagles Qualify for AFCON 2022

Nigeria have confirmed their place at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, even before the kick off of their game against Benin Republic in Porto Novo. This follows a goalless draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone in the early kick-off in Group L. The result means Lesotho can no longer qualify for next year’s tournament in Cameroon. It also means Sierra Leone cannot match the Super Eagles’ current tally of eight points. The Leone Stars now have four points after four matches, while their hosts have three, with one round of fixtures left. Gernot Rohr’s men take on the Squirrels by 5pm West African Time. The three-time African champions are now fighting to finish top of the group.

AFCON 2022: All the countries that have qualified so far

After Thursday’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, half of the teams that will play at the tournament have been confirmed. Comoros, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana and Egypt have joined Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Tunisia and hosts Cameroon in January’s tournament. Gambia qualified for their first-ever AFCON after a 1-0 win over Angola. Assan Ceesay netted the winning goal after an hour, ensuring The Gambia clinched one of the two tickets from Group D. The other slot was secured by Gabon who beat DR Congo 3-0. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Denis Bouanga, and Aaron Boupendza scored the goals for the Panthers. Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Kenya, was enough to get the point they needed in Group G to qualify, while Ghana drew 1-1 in South Africa to make it throu...

Benin vs Nigeria: Ighalo Gatecrashes into Super Eagles Camp Ahead of AFCON Qualifier

Former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, paid the team a surprise visit on Thursday. Ighalo met with Gernot Rohr’s men at their Lagos camp, where they are preparing for Saturday’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic. The 31-year-old announced his retirement from international football in 2019, after emerging top scorer at the AFCON that year. Although Rohr has stated several times he will welcome Ighalo back to the fold, his appearance at the Eko Hotel camp has nothing to do with a return to the Nigerian national team. The Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia frontman ate lunch with the team and left shortly before their evening training session. His replacement in the Super Eagles, Victor Osimhen, will be tasked with scoring the goals that will ...

Benin vs Nigeria: Rohr Reacts to NFF’s Plan for Super Eagles to Travel by sea

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said travelling by sea to Benin Republic ahead of the qualifiers on Saturday, is the best route. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided the team will travel for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier by boat. According to Rohr, the distance by sea is not only shorter but quite calm. “It will be the best way to go there. “Last Saturday, I made the trip and we were flying on the water. It was so quick and calm,” Rohr said according to SportingLife. The trip by sea takes around an hour. The Nigerian delegation will set sail for Benin capital Porto-Novo on Friday morning. The three-time African champions lead Group L with eight points from four matches, while Benin is second on seven points.

Benin Republic vs Nigeria: Rohr Gives Injury Update Ahead of AFCON Qualifier

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has confirmed there are no injury worries ahead of the team’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic on Saturday. All the invited 24 players including Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester City took part in full training at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. “The training was okay. It was a long training today because today is Wednesday and we still have the time to recover, so we wanted to physically work hard today. “It was a good training session, no injuries, tomorrow again we will do it, and then after tomorrow we will go to Porto-Novo and from Porto-Novo to Cotonou and back to Porto-Novo because we have one training session in Porto-Novo where we will play,” Rohr told reporters. Okoye Predicts how many Points Nigeria will get From Benin, Lesotho AFCON Qualifiers

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has said they will go all out for the maximum points, when they take on Benin Republic and Lesotho in their final 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Okoye manned the posts, when Nigeria threw away a four-goal lead to draw 4-4 against Sierra Leone in Benin City last November. He then kept a clean sheet during the second leg which ended 0-0 four days later in Freetown. “I’m looking forward to the game because I’m always honoured to represent my country and I’m trying to help the team and to get the win of course. “We can understand the disappointment from the last two matches against Sierra Leone, but we are going to work hard to six points in those two games,” Okoye told journalists on Tuesday. Rohr’s Plans hit as More Super Eagles Players Withdraw From Benin, Lesotho Games

Almeria forward, Sadiq Umar, has become the latest player to withdraw from Nigeria’s squad for their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next week. Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, had included Umar in his 24-man squad for the matches. However, he will not be able to honour his first call-up to the senior national team, having previously played for the U23s. Almeria have confirmed Umar will not be allowed to honour the invitation, because the necessary COVID-19 protocols to enable him to play for the Super Eagles has not been followed. Enyimba’s Anayo Iwuala has been called up as his replacement. Umar joins France-based duo of Moses Simon and Samuel Kalu (injury) in pulling out. French Clubs refuse to release African players for AFCON qualifiers

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has confirmed that French clubs will bar their players from travelling for any international games outside Europe. The decision was reached following a meeting between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs on Wednesday. Most African countries have their top players in France and won’t have them for the final 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. Some of the affected footballers include Zimbabwe striker, Tino Kadewere (Lyon), Nigeria winger Moses Simon (Nantes), Benin goalkeeper Saturnin Allagbe (Dijon), Cameroon striker Karl Toko Ekambi (Lyon), Senegal forward Boulaye Dia (Reims) and DR Congo’s Gael Kakuta (Lens). “In the absence of a ‘septaine’ exemption for foreign international players made available to their national team...

Rohr adds two more players to Super Eagles squad for Benin, Lesotho games

Genk striker, Paul Onuachu has been called up to the Nigeria national team, for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho. Onuachu was a shock exclusion from the original 24-man list released earlier this month. The 26-year-old could only make the standby list, despite his fine displays for Genk this season. However, Onuachu has now been added to the squad, along with Henry Onyekuru. Onuachu has been extended an invitation but Moses Simon and other Super Eagles stars in France are to miss the encounter due to the country’s COVID-19 protocol. “Following the uncertainty regarding the availability of players based in France [due to COVID 19 laws guiding the country], Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has extended an invitation to KRC Genk str...

Ex footballer, Finidi George faults coach Gernot Rohr over AFCON qualifiers squad

Former Super Eagles player, George Finidi, has faulted coach Gernot Rohr's squad list for Nigeria’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho. On Tuesday, March 9, the German coach released a 24-man list that included Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, who has been without a club since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr last October. Genk striker Paul Onuachu, who has scored just once in seven appearances, has failed to replicate his club form for the national team. For his club, he has scored 26 goals with three assists in 30 games across all competitions. Speaking with Punch, George Finidi admitted that Musa is a quality player who has done a lot for the country but should not be on the list on the basis of form or fitness. The 49-year-old f...

Rohr Reacts as West Brom Snub Ahmed Musa

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has expressed confidence that captain Ahmed Musa will find a new club soon, after his proposed move to West Brom fell through. Musa is currently a free agent, after leaving Saudi club Al Nassr in October 2020. After visiting the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos ahead of next month’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho, Rohr assured that the 28-year-old will be back to his best soon. “It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out at West Brom, but I believe Musa will find another club soon,” Rohr told BBC Sport Africa. “He has the ambition to get back as quickly as he can to play football again at club level. “Musa made a great impact for us in big matches like against Iceland in Russia, that is a rem...
