Senate Proposes 15 years Imprisonment for anyone who Pays Ransom to Kidnappers

A bill seeking to prohibit the payment and receipt of ransom for the release of any person kidnapped, imprisoned or wrongfully confined in the country was on Wednesday May 19 considered by the Nigerian senate. The bill titled Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2021 which stipulates a 15-year jail sentence for anyone found guilty of such action is being sponsored by Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi and it scaled second reading during plenary. Six-year-old Muhammad Kabir, who was killed by his abductors after ransom payment, has been laid to rest in Kaduna. MCI reported that Kabir was abducted by a neighbour in Badarawa area of Kaduna, taken to Kano and murdered after the abductors had collected N1 million ransom.  The four suspects were paraded by the police on Monday. Gunmen suspected to be militia have continued to make life unbearable for the people of Taraba State as they have continued to carry out attacks on residents of the State. DAILY POST gathered that two pregnant women and several other persons in Suntai village of Bali Local Government Council of the state have been abducted. Suntai village is the country home of the former late Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, who was involved in a plane crash in 2012 which rendered him incapacitated, leading to his death. A little boy, Muhammad Kabir, who was kidnapped from his parents’ home in a Kaduna state, has been found dead, seven days after he was taken and N5 million ransom was paid for his release.   DailyTrust reports that Kabir was taken from the Badarawa suburb of Kaduna North local government area and is believed to have been killed by his kidnappers, one of whom is said to be his neighbour. The police in Lokoja on Saturday rescued three kidnap victims from their abductors who kept them for six days. In a statement , the Kogi State Police Command said the victims – Mr Mohammed Salisu Cache, Mr Abdulraq Mohammed and Abdulraq Anataku – were rescued unhurt in the early hours of Saturday .
