Gumi in a fresh interview with Punch, said many bandits were ready for a dialogue and that the Federal government could use them to fight the “ugly ones'' and end the kidnappings carried out by them. The Sheik who had previously advocated for amnesty for bandits, said “We are always trying to do our best, but you see, you need two hands to shake. You know these people (bandits) need engagements from the government itself. If you dialogue with them without the involvement of the government, it is a problem. Government needs to be proactive with them. We have a lot of them that are ready to fight the bad ones. Us...

Reno Omokri Disagrees With Sheikh Gumi Over Amnesty For Bandits/Terrorists

Dear Sheikh Gumi, Why should we give bandits amnesty? Is it because they are Fulani or Muslim? What injustice are they fighting against? I read the Quran in Arabic. There is nothing in the Quran that supports your plea. General Buhari has been killing your fellow Muslim Shiite. Why have you not called for amnesty for Shiites who don’t kill, yet you want amnesty for bandits who kill? Speak the truth, for you will one day die and face God, who is neither a Christian or a Muslim, or a Northerner or Southerner, or a Fulani or Ogoni. You recently visited Zamfara and openly took a photo with hordes of bandits. These are killer terrorists. They have broken the Hudud of both God and man as outlined in Quran chapter 5. They have committed the sin of Ḥirābah by waging war on society....

Defectors Won’t Benefit From PDP Amnesty – Makarfi

Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said those who defected from the party might not benefit from the ‘no victor, no vanquished’ policy declared after the Supreme Court judgement. Makarfi, who spoke against the background of Wednesday’s defection of some members of the party from South West to the Mega Party, said such misbehaviour should not be covered by the no victor no vanquished policy. “No victory, no vanquished applies only to all the happenings before the Supreme Court ruling, that no individual will be punished for merely disagreeing, or not seeing eye to eye with one another before the matter was settled,” he explained. Lawmaker Who Sponsored Amnesty Bill For Looters Should Be Punished

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, has described the bill seeking to grant amnesty to looters in the House of Representatives as disgraceful. In a statement on Wednesday, Sagay said the sponsor of the bill, Mr. Linus Okorie should be punished. He said: “Now what shall we do with Linus Okorie? I propose that the House of Representatives should regard Linus’s bill to be so impertinent and scandalous as to earn him a suspension from the House, for the rest of the 8th session, i.e., until July 2019. That should serve notice that Nigeria will no longer tolerate such brazen impunity and corruption or its promotion thereof.” Sagay insisted that Okorie was promoting corruption through the bill. “That a Nigerian legislator (a lawm...

VAIDS Is Not Amnesty For Looters – Adeosun

Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, says the volutary assets and income declaration scheme (VAIDS) has nothing to do with the bill before the national assembly seeking amnesty for looters. Speaking at the VAIDS interactive session for executive business owners hosted by PwC in Lagos on Thursday, Adeosun said the bill is not from the executive but from the legislative arm of government. She said the position of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is clear on looters, stating that VAIDS is all about taxes not treasury looting. “The bill is a legislative bill; you know there are two types of bill, the executive bill and the legislative bill. I believe the bill is being sponsored by the legislative. This is not the priority or focus of the executive. Our view on treasu...

Amnesty Office Can’t Afford Training Of Ex-Militants Abroad Any Longer – Official

The Liaison Officer, Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, Liaison Office, Niger Delta, Piriye Kiyaramo, says that training of ex-militants overseas has become so exorbitant that the Amnesty Office could not sustain the scheme with its current budget. Kiyaramo, who spoke in an interview with NDV, said: “When President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office, the first thing he did was to cut down the budget from N53billion to N20 billion, which is why we are having the challenges of paying the stipends. What changed was the funding as previous administration had no problem with funding and the trainings were localized was because of funding. “The new N20 billion could not even pay the stipends alone and school fees, not to talk about running cost. Now we are in the reintegration stage of the ...

“You Are Lying” – Nigerian Army Lampoons Amnesty International

Politics Nigeria has obtained a press release from the Nigerian army over recent accusations of human rights abuse and murder leveled against them by Amnesty International. The statement reads; The report recently published by the Amnesty International (AI) alleging death of 240 people including babies in Borno and 177 pro Biafran agitators, is yet another in its series of spurious fabrications aimed at tarnishing the good image of the Nigerian military. Without mincing words, the allegations contained in the said report are not only inconceivable but has no place in the Nigerian military.
