Erdogan Calls Ozil, Praises Exit From German Team

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday said he had backed Mesut Ozil’s decision to quit the German national team on racism grounds in a telephone call with the Turkish-origin football star, wading into a controversy that caused uproar in Germany. Ozil stunned football at the weekend by announcing he planned never to play again for the national team after criticism he deemed to be racist of a meeting with Erdogan two months ago. His move has divided opinion in Germany but received warm applause in Turkey, whose government has long campaigned against what Ankara sees as rising Islamophobia in Europe. “Last night I spoke to Mesut. His attitude in the statement is completely patriotic, it is absolutely praiseworthy behaviour,” Erdogan said, quoted by state news agency Anadolu. “I k...

Turkish Authorities Ban New Year’s Event In Istanbul’s Taksim Square

Turkish security forces have issued a ban on New Year’s Eve celebrations in Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square, citing security concerns, the state-run news agency, Anadolu, reported on Wednesday. The authorities noted 2016 attack by an Islamic State member on Jan.1 at the Reina nightclub, which killed 39 people. The accused attacker who is on trial, was filmed in the Taksim area before choosing to attack revelers further north in the city. Ismail Kilic, the Police Chief of Beygolu District, said measures would be put in place in streets leading towards Taksim to ensure a peaceful time. Taksim was the scene of anti-government protests in 2013. The government has since banned May 1 workers’ marches in the square, which is of symbolic importance for leftist movements in Turkey. ...

Four Dead, 20 Missing As Migrant Boat Sinks Off Turkey’s Black Sea

Four people drowned and up to 20 were missing on Friday after a fishing boat carrying migrants sunk off Turkey’s Black Sea coast, reports said. Thirty-eight migrants were rescued but search and rescue efforts are in progress to find 15-20 people still missing in the incident off the Kefken district of the Kocaeli province east of Istanbul, the Anadolu and Dogan news agencies said. It was not clear where the boat had left from and where it was headed. Turkey has emerged as a hub for migrants from trouble zones around the world including Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan seeking to move to the European Union. In 2015, around a million people undertook risky sea journeys to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, mostly to Greece from Turkey over the Aegean Sea. Thousands died in the peri...

Turkey has identified the gunman in the Istanbul nightclub massacre as the president vowed that the country won't surrender to terrorists or become divided. The gunman, who killed 39 people during New Year's celebrations at the Reina club, is still at large but Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said authorities had identified the man, without providing details. "The identity of the person who carried out the attack on the Reina nightclub has been established," Cavusoglu told Anadolu in a live televised interview. Turkish police, meanwhile, detained at least five suspected Islamic State group militants believed to be linked to the attack, the state-run news agency reported. The operation was launched in the Aegean port city of Izmir and was ongoing, Anadolu Agency said. IS has claimed r...
