Apple’s iOS 11.3 To Introduce New Battery And Health Record Features

Apple is bringing iOS 11.3 to iPhones and iPads this spring, and today the company released a preview of what we can expect from the upgrade. The most notable improvements are the battery health indicator, upgrades to ARKit and the introduction of Health Records.   iPhone batteries have been a big subject of discussion lately, with the recent news that Apple has been throttling performance on older phones to balance aging battery life. Now, Apple is replacing batteries on some phones for a low fee. This latest update includes a feature that shows the health of your phone’s battery, as well as if it needs to be serviced. What’s more, users will be able to see if that power management feature is turned on, and toggle it off if they so choose.   Additionally, the company...

Facebook To Open Digital Training Hubs In Europe

Facebook said on Monday it would open three new centres in Europe to train people in digital skills. The social media giant said it was committed to training one million people over the next two years as part of its drive to show its contribution to the bloc. The U.S. company – which has faced regulatory pressure in Europe over issues ranging from privacy to antitrust – said it would open three “community skills hubs” in Spain, Poland and Italy. It said it would also invest 10 million euros (12.2 million dollars) in France through its artificial intelligence research facility. “People are worried that the digital revolution is leaving people behind and we want to make sure that we’re investing in digital skills to get people the skills they need to fully participate in the digi...

Apple, Samsung Investigated In Italy For Slowing Down Old Phones

Italy’s competition authority is looking into charges that Apple and Samsung are surreptitiously slowing down old phones to push consumers into buying new products. Consumer groups across the world have accused the two tech giants of so-called planned obsolescence, or hampering the performance of their old products, via software updates. The AGCM watchdog said it opened two separate dossiers for “unfair commercial practice” against the tech giants, following complaints from consumers and a preliminary investigation from its own offices. The authority’s move could potentially lead to Apple and Samsung being fined. Apple apologised in December 2017 for deliberately slowing down some ageing iPhone models via software updates but said it did so in order to prolong battery life and ...

iPhones Addiction Profitable – Apple

Apple Inc investors on Tuesday shrugged off concerns raised by two shareholders about kids getting hooked on iPhones, saying that for now a little addiction might not be a bad thing for profits. Hedge fund JANA Partners LLC and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) pension fund said on Saturday that iPhone overuse could be hurting children’s developing brains. Some investors said the habit-forming nature of gadgets and social media are one reason why companies like Apple, Google parent Alphabet Inc and Facebook Inc added 630 billion dollars to their market value in 2017. “We invest in things that are addictive,” said Apple shareholder Ross Gerber, chief executive of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management. He also owns stock in coffee retailer Star...

Apple Apologises Over Slowed iPhones

Facing lawsuits and consumer outrage after it said it slowed older iPhones with flagging batteries, Apple Inc is dropping prices for battery replacements and will change its software to show users whether their phone battery is good. In a posting on its website on Thursday, Apple apologised over its handling of the battery issue and said it would make a number of changes for customers “to recognise their loyalty and to regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple’s intentions.” Apple made the move to address concerns about the quality and durability of its products at a time when it is charging $999 for its newest flagship model, the iPhone X. The company said it would cut the price of an out-of-warranty battery replacement from $79 to $29 for an iPhone 6 or later, starti...

Apple Faces Lawsuits After Saying It Slows Down Aging IPhones

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) defrauded iPhone users by slowing devices without warning to compensate for poor battery performance, according to eight lawsuits filed in various federal courts in the week since the company opened up about the year-old software change. The tweak may have led iPhone owners to misguided attempts to resolve issues over the last year, the lawsuits contend. All the lawsuits - filed in U.S. District Courts in California, New York and Illinois - seek class-action to represent potentially millions of iPhone owners nationwide. A similar case was lodged in an Israeli court on Monday, the newspaper Haaretz reported. Apple did not respond to an email seeking comment on the filings. The company acknowledged last week for the first time in detail that operating system...

Toshiba Signs $18bn Deal To Sell Chip Unit To Bain Capital

Toshiba said on Thursday it had formally signed a deal to sell its memory chip business to a group led by US investor Bain Capital for around $18 billion. The sale to the consortium — which includes US tech giants Apple and Dell as well as South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix — is seen as crucial to keeping the struggling Japanese conglomerate afloat. Thursday’s signing caps a months-long saga that saw heated courtroom battles, rival bids and the near-delisting of one of Japan’s best-known firms. “Today we signed a deal to sell” all the shares of its prized memory chip business to the consortium with a price tag of two trillion yen ($18 trillion), Toshiba said. The Japanese firm had already said last week it would sell the business to the Bain-led group and aims to complete the sale...
