Lacazette to Face Rennes As UEFA Reduces Arsenal Striker’s Ban

Arsenal striker, Alexander Lacazette, is available to play Rennes in the Europa League on Thursday, after UEFA reduced his ban to two matches. Lacazette was initially handed a three-game suspension, following his red card against BATE Borisov in the last round. However, having sat out the second leg of that tie and 3-1 defeat in France last week, Arsenal have seen an appeal reduce the suspension to just two games. The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body’s decision read: “The appeal lodged by Arsenal FC has been partially upheld. “To suspend the Arsenal FC player Alexandre Lacazette for two (2) UEFA competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible for serious rough play.” Unai Emery will, however, be without defender Sokratis Papastathopoulo...

Rennes’ French forward Hatem Ben Arfa (R) shoots a free kick during the UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg football match between Stade Rennais FC and Arsenal FC at the Roazhon Park stadium in Rennes, northwestern France on March 7, 2019. Rennes forward Hatem Ben Arfa revealed the sight of ‘agitated’ former Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery made him laugh in the win over Arsenal.Led by Ben Arfa, the Ligue 1 side ran out 3-1 winners in their Europa League last-16 first leg on Thursday, with Ismaila Sarr’s late third goal putting Rennes in control of the tie heading into the return match. The victory might have been particularly sweet for Ben Arfa, who was widely reported to have had a fractious relationship with Emery at PSG. The former France internat...

Bollywood Star Esha Gupta Compares Iwobi To Gorilla, Fans Come For Her

Arsenal club ambassador Esha Gupta has apologised after she shared comments that compared Alex Iwobi to a gorilla. The Bollywood star claimed she did not realise it was racist, but furious fans have called for the Gunners to sack her. The 33-year-old shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation to her Instagram profile, which has 3.4 million followers. In the image, she recieved messages from Varun_Gupta17 which read: "Solves our winger issues. I can't see that gorilla faced Iwobi running down the flank again. He's so bad ya." She replied: "Hahahahahaha I honestly dunno why they don't bench him more." Varun_Gupta17 then responded: "It's like evolution stopped for him. Didn't change from Neanderthal to man." Santi Cazorla Departs Arsenal

Arsenal have announced that Santi Cazorla is to leave the club following the end of his contract. Cazorla played under Arsene Wenger for six seasons after joining from Malaga in 2012, but he will now follow the former manager out of the Emirates Stadium. The 33-year-old saw the latter phases of his Arsenal career marred by an injury to his Achilles sustained in October 2016 and hasn't featured for the Gunners since. Cazorla took to Twitter and wrote; 'Hello to all the Arsenal fans. I am very sad to be leaving after so many great times. I have loved my time with the club and our time together and the special moments we have shared. Our FA Cup win in 2014 we will never forget. It was a great moment for me and for the club. Ian Wright: Wenger Was Forced To Announce His Decision To Leave The Club

Former Arsenal star Ian Wright has suggested Arsene Wenger was forced to announce his decision to leave the club. The Gunners released a statement on Friday in which Wenger stated his intention to step down at the end of the season, despite having a year remaining on his contract. The Frenchman has resisted repeated calls for him to resign from disgruntled sections of the club's fanbase in recent years, Wenger ignoring their dissatisfaction to sign a two-year extension in May 2017. And Wright, who won the Premier League title under Wenger in 1997-98, suspects the 68-year-old's hand has been forced amid concerns about the team's form behind the scenes at Emirates Stadium. "Arsene Wenger is a man of principle, honesty and integrity – that is why I am convinced he has been sacked ...

UEFA rules prevented Henrikh Mkhitaryan from wearing his No 7 shirt

Henrikh Mkhitaryan may be known as Arsenal's new No 7 but that wasn't the case as the Gunners geared up for Thursday's Europa League clash with Ostersunds. The Armenian had to pull on the No 77 shirt for the clash in Sweden with Alexis Sanchez having already worn his number in the tournament earlier this season. Mkhitaryan may have inherited the iconic number from Sanchez, who moved to Manchester United in the January swap deal, but he will have to settle for the next best thing for the remainder of the team's European campaign. UEFA rules state only one player can wear a shirt number in their competitions in any one campaign. Arsenal made the announcement on the same day as announcing their squad for the later stages of the competition earlier this month. The Europa League marks the ...

Arsenal Want To Keep Hold Of Star Duo Alexis Sanchez And Mesut Ozil

Both Sanchez and Ozil are out of contract next summer and are set to walk away from the Emirates Stadium for free. Sanchez, who was close to joining Manchester City for £60million in August, remains on Pep Guardiola's radar while Manchester United are keeping tabs on Ozil. However Kroenke, speaking ahead of the club's AGM, has now called on the star duo to commit their future to the north London side but said 'it takes two to dance'. Kroenke, speaking The Daily Telegraph, said: 'We want to attract top players, keep top players and those guys are top players. 'I watched them on Sunday and they looked really good and played really, really, really well. 'We'd love to keep them. It takes two to dance. We'll keep working to attract more talent but some of the guys we've got are looking pre...

Arsenal Ace Reiss Nelson: I’ll Be Delighted If I Get Anywhere Near To Neymar’s Level

Arsenal starlet Reiss Nelson has played down comparisons with Neymar but he does admit that he has learned a lot from club legend Thierry Henry. Nelson made his first start in continental competition in last month's Europa League win at BATE Borisov and former Gunners defender Martin Keown was enthused by the 17-year-old's performance. "It's quite phenomenal the ability this boy has," the retired defender told  BT Sport  . "There’s certainly a big future there, he really does look a wonderful talent. "He showed the sort of touches that you often see or associate with a Neymar or a real top player." Speaking exclusively to  Goal  , Nelson confessed to have being left a little embarrassed by having been likened to the world's most expensive player. "That is a very big stretch to say som...

Wenger Bemoans ‘Cruel’ Arsenal Schedule Ahead Of BATE Borisov clash

Arsene Wenger has described Arsenal's recent fixture list as "cruel" after the Gunners were scheduled to play in the Premier League on Monday ahead of a Europa League trip to Belarus. A brace from club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette earned the north-London side a 2-0 victory over West Brom at Emirates Stadium. But the timing of the match has left the team with a limited opportunity to recover, prepare and travel to Eastern Europe for the Group H fixture against BATE Borisov. "I have a decision to make and at the moment I would say that the schedule for us is a bit cruel," the manager said of his next team selection after the win over the Baggies. "We played tonight, we play in BATE Borisov on Thursday night and play Sunday at 12 o'clock here," he added, referring to the Premier Lea...

Wenger Explains Decision To Deny Lacazette A Shot At First Arsenal Hat-Trick

Arsene Wenger says Alexandre Lacazette was denied an opportunity to net his first Arsenal hat-trick because he was “tired”. The France international continued his impressive start to life with the Gunners on Monday as he bagged a brace in a 2-0 victory over West Brom. Lacazette opened the scoring in the Premier League encounter at Emirates Stadium in the 20th minute, before going on to convert a 67th-minute penalty. The 26-year-old would have had his eyes on the match ball at that stage, but was replaced seven minutes from the end by countryman Olivier Giroud. Explaining that decision, Arsenal boss Wenger told the Evening Standard: “I took him off because he was tired. “I would have loved him [to score a hat-trick]… he had an opportunity. But I gave him the penalty as well you know. O...

Wenger Unwilling To Sacrifice Any Potential Trophy

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has no plans to sacrifice any competition after Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola questioned the value of the Carabao Cup. Manchester United boss Mourinho suggested scrapping the cup could help English clubs be more competitive in Europe. The Portuguese tactician was backed by Manchester City counterpart Guardiola, who played down the significance of the competition. But Wenger was unwilling to follow suit, saying there was too much pressure to simply just give up on any potential trophy. "With the pressure that every club is under now, you cannot sacrifice any competition," the Frenchman said. "You know that you could pay the price sometimes for it because if you go further in the League Cup, at some stage you play semi-finals where you are home and away i...

Thibaut Courtois: I Will Miss Costa But Chelsea Can Move On With Morata

Costa arrived in Madrid on Friday to complete a £57.2m transfer from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid, although he won't be eligible to play for the La Liga club until the new year. He has arrived in time though to see the two teams face each other in a Champions League group game at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday night. Should both clubs reach the quarter finals (or beyond) of Europe's premier club competition, they could be drawn together in the knock-out stages (rules dictate sides who qualify from the same group avoid each other in the last 16). Courtois doesn't want such an outcome given Costa's quality and said: "I'm happy we don't have to face him until the new year (at the earliest). The Gunners midfielder, who has made his first-team comeback for the club after spending last season at Bournemouth, posted a picture on Instagram of himself from his "digs days", when he was sharing a house with the Pole. “TBT to the digs days and living with the mad man Wojciech Szczesny," he wrote. “Can’t believe he let me have my hair like this.” While he used the hashtag #stillbetterlookingthanhim, it was Szczesny who had the last laugh, replying: "Was that when you were still good at football?" A number of fans commented on the burn, crowning the Juventus goalkeeper as the winner of the exchange.

Arsenal Record Lowest-Ever Crowd At Emirates Stadium

The crowd of 44,064 that witnessed Arsenal's win over Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night was the lowest-ever for a competitive first-team fixture at the Emirates Stadium. The number of tickets sold for the third round tie came in less than the previous low of 46,539 for a League Cup match with Shrewsbury Town on September 20, 2011. Those present at the Emirates on Wednesday night suggested that although 44,064 tickets had officially been sold, the large sections of empty seats suggested the true attendance was even lower. Arsenal had tried to boost sales by offering tickets priced cheaply at £10 for adults and £5 for children, but the prospect of turning out to see League One opposition wasn't too appealing. And so it transpired, with the lowest gate since Arsenal m...

Sanchez To United: Mourinho Wants To Snatch Arsenal Star From Man City

The Manchester United boss has been quoted a £25million signing-on fee for the Arsenal striker, who will be a free agent next summer. Sanchez cannot sign an official pre-contract with the Red Devils until the new year as it is an internal transfer between two clubs in the Premier League. But an agreement could be put in place for the deal to go through. City tried to get Sanchez in the summer but had a final bid of £60m rejected. The Chile superstar, 28, wanted the switch to the Etihad but his advisers also sounded out United at the time. Many at City were surprised boss Pep Guardiola went for Sanchez in the summer, given that would mean dropping one of Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus. That pair have struck up a great understanding on the pitch this season, which may mean City will re...

Gianluigi Buffon is likely to retire at the end of the season, with Szczesny recruited as his successor this summer in a €15m deal from Arsenal. Despite that, Tuttosport is reporting today that there has been contact with the entourage of Oblak in recent days. The Slovenian goalkeeper is under contract until 2021, but has so far refused to discuss and extension and the newspaper believes he is interested in Juve’s proposal. However, his release clause is set at €100m so the Bianconeri would have to look to lower that by sending players to Atleti in exchange.

Arsenal Investigating Cologne Fans Chaos

Arsenal have launched a "full review" into the situation that saw far more than Cologne's allocated 3,000 fans attend Thursday's Europa League clash at the Emirates Stadium. Kick-off was pushed back by one hour to 21.05 BST due to crowd congestion in London, with a reported 20,000 away supporters said to have travelled from Germany. Cologne's allocation was set in line with UEFA rules, but thousands travelled without tickets and turned up at the Emirates, with the resulting congestion affecting the ease of entry for home supporters. Once inside the stadium, some travelling fans are said to have climbed over barriers in order to get into the home supporters' section, where they mixed with Arsenal fans as segregation became impossible for stewards. After Arsenal's 3-1 win, Arsene Wenger ...

Wenger Expects UEFA Investigation Into Cologne Fans Crowd Chaos

The Gunners ran out 3-1 winners in the Group H opener, which was delayed by an hour after away supporters caused havoc outside the stadium. As many as 20,000 Cologne fans are believed to have made the journey from western Germany despite only 3,000 tickets being made available. That meant many attempted to enter without tickets or with tickets for the Arsenal sections, where it soon became clear ahead of kick-off that plenty had succeeded. Five arrests were made as the Metropolitan Police said that additional officers had been deployed to the area following the unrest. Substitute Sead Kolasinac volleyed Arsenal level after they went in at half-time trailing to Jhon Cordoba's long-range effort. Wenger Will Not Use Arsenal’s Europa League Match As Chelsea Excuse

Arsene Wenger insists he will not use the Europa League as an excuse for a poor performance when Arsenal play rivals Chelsea on Sunday. After missing out on the Premier League top four last season, Arsenal have dropped to the Europa League and will open their campaign in Europe's second competition at home to Cologne on Thursday. That will come three days before a crunch trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea, a game which will see Arsenal aim to beat a fellow Premier League top-six team for the first time in 14 attempts. If Arsenal fail to perform, Wenger will not be blaming the Cologne game — for which Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey will be rested — as he feels there is enough time to recover. "It is a good opportunity to show we can cope," Wenger told reporters when asked abou...

But the Arsenal boss believes the Premier League still offers the best opportunity for his side. "It is not the best chance but it is one of the opportunities," he said. "I think the best way to do it is through the Premier League. We did that for 20 years. "We don't calculate this is the best way to the Champions League qualifiers. "But it is an opportunity and we want to win every competition we play in." Wenger also insisted missing out on Europe's premier competition has not been a blow to his or the club's reputation. He said: "It is true I was close to leaving as I wanted to play but after big reflection I wanted to stay. The story was not over at Arsenal. "As I said to the boss, our story is not finished, and everyone was pleased with that." Arsene Wenger believes making the top four is Arsenal's best hope of reaching next season's Champions League. ‘Pathetic’ Arsenal Should Have Been In For Drinkwater, Says Merson

Arsenal missed another trick in what has been a “shambolic” season so far by allowing Chelsea to sign Danny Drinkwater, says Paul Merson. The Gunners headed into the international break on the back of a humbling 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, before then enduring more transfer frustration on deadline day. While they were able to prevent Alexis Sanchez from leaving the club, his value is only going to fall as he continues to run down the final year of his contract.Merson believes there are deep-lying problems at Emirates Stadium and feels more should have been done over the summer in order to get players in with a bit of “fight”.He wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “The players look like they couldn’t have cared less [at Anfield]. You get the sack when your players don’t look fussed. But not ...

Report: Lazio Are Interested In Arsenal’s Lucas Perez

The Spanish forward joined the Gunners last summer, but appears to be surplus to requirements for this season.Deportivo La Coruna have been heavily linked with a move for him, but LaLazioSiamoNoi reports that sporting director Igli Tare has also been in contact with his entourage. However, the Aquile wouldn’t be able to meet his €3.5m per season wages, so would look to take Perez on loan with an option to buy.Having spent over €20m to buy him, Arsenal would prefer an outright sale or at least an obligation to buy. With interest from Spain, it’s therefore thought to be unlikely that the Biancocelesti can get a deal done, though not impossible.
