How Bruno Fernandes reportedly disobeyed Solskjaer’s order to leave penalty for Ronaldo

Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, took the penalty in their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa despite being instructed to leave it for Cristiano Ronaldo, according to The Transfer Window podcast. It was United’s first loss of the new Premier League campaign. Fernandes placed the ball on the spot with Villa a goal up and blazed his effort over the bar. Following Ronaldo’s return to United, many expected the 36-year-old to take over penalty duty from his compatriot. Solskjaer had instructed that Ronaldo take any penalty ahead of their clash with Villa, but Fernandes took it upon himself to step up. “Very interesting interaction between the Aston Villa goalkeeper, the penalty kick specialist, Emiliano Martinez, and Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s fundamental – Messi hails Argentina goalkeeper

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has named Aston Villa shot-stopper, Emiliano Martinez, as ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’. The Paris Saint-Germain forward also described Martinez as ‘fundamental’, adding that he has established himself in the game. Messi said this following Martinez’s impressive display for Argentina in their 3-0 win over Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier in the earlier hours of Monday. Martinez made two stunning saves to keep out Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez in the first half before goals from Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Lautaro Martinez gave Argentina the win over Uruguay. “Dibu [Emiliano] Martinez is fundamental,” said Messi, via TNT Sports. “When they come to him, he always responds. “He established himself in goal and we have one of the ...

Ronaldo has added to Man Utd’s problems – Carragher

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has said Cristiano Ronaldo has added to Manchester United’s problem of being a team of individuals. Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer on a two-year deal. However, despite the 36-year-old scoring five goals in five games, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have hit a poor run of form following defeats against Young Boys in the Champions League, West Ham in the Carabao Cup and Aston Villa in the Premier League. The Red Devils also drew at home to Everton on Saturday. Carragher told The Telegraph: “They remain a team of individuals rather than a team. Cristiano Ronaldo has added to that rather than fixed it. “That’s why, despite a brilliant squad, they are not yet at the level of the other three. “Dropping five points ...

The Blues snapped up the Spain international from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day, but have handed him just 45 minutes of Premier League time Thomas Tuchel has explained why Saul Niguez has not played for Chelsea in the Premier League since being hooked at half-time during his nightmare debut for the Blues against Aston Villa. The Spain international midfielder was brought to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day on an initial loan agreement from Atletico Madrid. Saul was thrust straight into Tuchel’s starting XI against Villa on September 11, but saw just 45 minutes of action and has played only 76 more since then against the same opponents in the Carabao Cup.

Nuno keeps Kane faith as Premier League goal drought reaches six-year low for Spurs striker

The England international has struggled to find his domestic form after reintegrating into the team following a tumultuous summer Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo says Harry Kane's return to form "will come" with the striker not finding the net in six Premier League matches, his frustrating streak continuing in the 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. Kane pushed for a move to Manchester City over the summer, and while he has accepted his status as a Spurs player after no deal materialised he has so far failed to give his side the trademark finishing expected of him. The Villa result broke the squad's own dry spell, ending a run of three straight league defeats.

Spirited Spurs halt losing streak with win over Villa

Tottenham ended their three-game Premier League losing streak with a hard-fought, morale-boosting 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg gave Spurs a deserved half-time lead with the breakthrough goal before the half-hour mark, but Aston Villa levelled on 67 minutes through Ollie Watkins' close-range finish. But parity lasted just four minutes as Heung-Min Son, the creator of Hojbjerg's opener, capped a memorable performance by laying on the winning goal as his driven cross was turned into his own net by Matt Targett while under pressure from Lucas Moura. Tottenham's first league victory since August 29 eases the pressure on under-fire manager Nuno Espirito Santo, whose side halted Villa's two-game winning run as they leapfrogged them up to eighth in the table.

Ahead of the weekend's game vs Manchester United, there are calls once more from the Toffees' faithful for the Nigeria international to be dropped In Everton's recent defeat to Aston Villa, Rafa Benitez made an interesting decision after an hour, with the score at 0-0. The former Liverpool boss brought off Salomon Rondon, and in the Venezuelan's stead sent on midfielder Andre Gomes. There was a brief moment of confusion before the upshot of that decision became obvious. In the absence of both Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Alex Iwobi, to that point employed in a quite ineffectual brief on the right, would play as the side's centre-forward.

Aston Villa defeated Man United in the Premier League, thanks to Kortney Hause’s late strike. But after the match, Solskjaer had said he felt Aston Villa’s goal should have been ruled out for offside, as replays showed striker Ollie Watkins clearly blocking Man United goalkeeper David De Gea as Hause headed the ball into the net.
