Court reverses ex-Emir Sanusi’s banishment from Kano

Justice Anwuli Chikere of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has declared the banishment of the deposed Emir of Kano state, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, from the state as unconstitutional. Delivering her judgment today, November 30, Justice Anwuli Chikere held that the Emirate Council Law, 2019, used by the state government in banishing Sanusi was in conflict with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. She held that the country’s constitution was supreme and any law that ran contrary to it shall be null and void. The judge declared that the former emir had the right to live anywhere, including Kano State, as enshrined in the country’s constitution. North Korean Govt ”sentences man to death” for smuggling copies of Netflix’s blockbuster series “Squid Game”

A man has reportedly been sentenced to death in North Korea for smuggling copies of Netflix’s blockbuster series “Squid Game” into the country. According to Radio Free Asia (via Variety), authorities were led to the man after they caught high school students watching the series. The report states that “Squid Game” was smuggled into the country from China through the use of a USB flash drive. The smuggler faces death by firing squad, while the students involved in bringing “Squid Game” into school are facing prison sentences. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has denied having a hand in Sanusi Lamido Sanusi's dethronement as Emir of Kano. In a lawsuit filed before a federal high court in Abuja, Sanusi reportedly accused the Attorney General of Kano State, Ibrahim Muktar and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN) of instructing operatives of the Department of State Services and police to detain him after his dethronement. Human right activist, Femi Falana has stated that the dethronement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano and subsequent banishment is illegal.
