CBN Injects $186m As Forex Reserves Beat $30bn

Following Tuesday’s assurances by Godwin Emefiele, the CBN says it will continue to intervene in the foreign exchange market, as it injected $185.86 million into the retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS). Isaac Okorafor, the bank’s acting director in charge of corporate communications, while confirming the auction sale, disclosed that out of the auctioned amount, only $3.14million was sold as spots, while the sum of $182.72million was sold as forwards. In a statement released on its website today, the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, has asked Nigerians seeking to buy forex for BTA, PTA, medical and school fees but are being frustrated by any bank, to call this number 07002255226 to report such bank. According to the statement, some Bank customers have complained that since the apex bank issued a directive that banks should sell forex at N360/$1 to its customers, some of the banks have refused their request for FOREX, saying they do not have enough foreign exchange. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has approved the granting of a Wholesale Development Finance Institution Licence with national authorization, to the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) Plc. The approval was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Officer of DBN dated March 28, 2017. The letter was signed by the Deputy Governor of the CBN in charge of Financial System Stability. The approval was subject to meeting the minimum capital requirement of N100 billion and the reconstitution of the Board of the Bank and reviewing its organogram. A police officer, Olotu Owoicho has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by an Abuja High Court sitting at Apo for causing the death of one Mrs. Doris Nonye Okere, who was a bank cashier till her death. The convict killed her while she was in a taxi on her way to work on January 31. He shot at the taxi and Mrs. Okere was killed instantly. Justice Silvanus C. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced the source of the $40million paid to Roberts Azibaola, who is former President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin, to a bank in London. The cash was wired through Citibank N. A. Canada Square Canary in Wharf London E 145 LB into the account of One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited of Azibaola.About $6million of the money was paid to a bureau de change in Abuja,the Nation reports..
