China Bans BBC World News From Broadcasting

Authorities in China have banned BBC World News from broadcasting in the country. The news follows a move by Britain's communications regulator to strip the state-run China Global Television Network (CGTN) of its broadcast license in the U.K. last week. The CGTN was also found in breach of British broadcasting regulations last year, for airing the footage of UK citizen, Peter Humphrey 'confessing to a criminal offence' after he was allegedly forced to do so. According to the state news agency Xinhua, China's National Radio and Television Administration said BBC World News "was found to have seriously violated regulations on radio and television management and on overseas satellite television channel management in its China-related reports which went against the requirements that ...

I Think El-rufai Doesn’t Understand The Issue Of Insecurity – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has alleged that his Kaduna Counterpart, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, is either misunderstood or ill-informed on the insecurity affecting the north. In an interview with BBC, El-Rufai had said the lack of synergy on how to tackle banditry is fuelling it. But speaking on Radio France International on Thursday, Ganduje said he once spoke with El-Rufai and the Governor of Bauchi State on how to tackle insecurity. He said he initiated the conversation based on the advice of security agents on how Falgore forest in Kano could be made safe for the benefits of other states. Ganduje said Bauchi and Kaduna governments sent representatives to a meeting where insecurity was discussed and strategies adopted, wondering what prompted El-Rufai’s remark. ...

Port Harcourt Pollution Endangers Residents’ Health – BBC

Kalio Keturah Nicholas remembers the time she could eat fresh fish from the river behind her house in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Those times are now a distant memory as oil spills onto the shore and everything in sight is covered in a thick layer of black soot. Residents blame illegal refining of crude oil as the leading cause of soot in the atmosphere. But for Kalio, it's not just a question of cleanliness anymore - the oil and soot are seriously affecting her health. Precious Ede, the chairman of a government committee tackling soot in the region, says that the government is using military officers to crack down on illegal refining of crude oil, and sensitising the public on the dangers of air pollution.

How Abacha Stole Billions In Truckloads – Enrico Monfrini (BBC)

A report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has shed more light on how former military Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha stole billions of dollars using “security” purposes as a cover. The details were released by Swiss lawyer Enrico Monfrini, who was contracted by the Federal Government in 1999 to trace the public fund looted by the late military head of state. He spoke exclusively with the British broadcasting giant. Abacha, who ruled from 1993 to 1998, died in office in mysterious circumstances on June 6, 1998. According to the man hired to get the money back, an international treasure hunt spread over decades revealed that the former head of state stole billions of dollars through dubious methods, including directly withdrawing humongous cash from the Central Bank of Nig...

He added that his duty in the ruling party is not hindering his efforts to discharge his responsibilities. “On the issue of staying, there is no way I can spend a month without spending three or four days in Yobe state. And then even if I return to Yobe, I won’t advertise or make it public that today I will be in Yobe and tomorrow I will be leaving,” the governor said. “Wait, Let me land, list...

Social Media Users In Northern Nigeria Attack BBC For Publishing Photo Of Saudi King Shaking Hands With Germany’s Angela Merkel

Social media users from Northern Nigeria have attacked British Broadcasting Corporation (Hausa Service) for publishing a picture of King Salman of Saudi Arabia shaking hands with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. BBC Hausa had on Tuesday morning published the picture of the duo together on its online platform. “Saudi King Salman emphasizes Germany's importance to freedom of expression,” the photo was captioned. But some commentators from Northern Nigeria accused the British media organisation of ‘undermining Islam’ by using a picture that shows the custodian of Islam’s holiest place in a handshake with a woman. Some also accused it of ‘working for Jews’ and warned the staff to be cautious of what they called the “wrath of God”. Earlier on Monday, social media users from No...

They were wrong. In strange circumstances at the Crucible Theatre, where fans came and went like leaves on the wind due to ever-changing government guidelines, O’Sullivan triumphed at the sport’s showpiece event for the sixth time, equalling Steve Davis’ total and taking himself just one behind Stephen Hendry’s record of seven world titles. Nigeria Projected Among Top 20 Economies In The World By 2050 – BBC

Brexit, coronavirus, and trade tiffs may be making economic headwinds, but despite immediate challenges, the world economy is projected to keep growing at a rapid pace over the next few decades. In fact, by 2050, the global market is projected to double its current size, even as the UN forecasts the world’s population will only grow by a modest 26%. Though it can be challenging to predict exactly how the future will unfold, most economists agree on one thing: today’s developing markets will be tomorrow’s economic superpowers. According to The World in 2050 report by international professional services firm PwC, in 30 years, six of the seven of the world’s largest economies will be today’s emerging economies, surpassing the US (dropping from 2nd to 3rd), Japan (dropping from 4th to 8t...
