Chelsea take Wrexham wonderkid Davies on trial in bid to boost youth team

The youngster is the latest talent to get his chance to impress at Cobham Training Centre, with the Blues looking for a left-sided full-back Chelsea have taken Wrexham's 16-year-old left-back Daniel Davies on a week-long trial amid a six-month-long aim to fill a gap in their academy. This summer's youth exodus has left Chelsea searching for players from non-league teams, with several being considered or signed in recent weeks. Davies has had trial offers from Liverpool, Brighton and Stoke City, with more clubs likely to come to the table - but the Blues are currently at the front of the queue. There would be no compensation due should Chelsea go ahead and offer him a contract.

Norwich still winless as wasteful Sargent lets Brighton off

Josh Sargent wasted two great chances as Norwich's search for a first Premier League win of the season continued with a 0-0 draw at home to Brighton. Brighton should have taken the lead themselves during a first half in which Neal Maupay was harshly denied a penalty when both the referee and VAR overlooked clear contact from Tim Krul, before the goalkeeper pulled off an outstanding fingertip save to push Leandro Trossard's volley onto the bar. However, Sargent twice let the visitors off the hook either side of the interval. Robert Sanchez's failed attempt to sweep up presented him with an open goal 20 yards out but his shot was tame and Shane Duffy was able to get back to clear. Then, after the restart, a poor first touch from Sargent when through one-on-one allowed Dan Burn to rec...

Arteta reacts as Thierry Henry questions Arsenal’s progress under him

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has labelled remarks made by club legend Thierry Henry as “just another opinion”. Henry, in an interview this week, questioned the Gunners’ progress under Arteta. Arsenal have won 10 points from their last four Premier League fixtures, but Henry doesn’t feel things are going in “the right direction”. When asked whether he had read Henry’s comments, Arteta told a press conference on Thursday: “I haven’t. I am just hearing them from you.” Henry also said Arsenal had “suffered” in their 0-0 draw at Brighton in their most recent league game. Pressed on whether it was helpful for a former player to make such remarks, Arteta added: “It’s just another opinion. You have to respect that.”

Defences on top as Arsenal held by Brighton

Arsenal’s three-game winning run came to an end at Brighton as the teams played out a 0-0 draw in wet and windy conditions at The Amex. In a game that produced 29 shots, 21 of those from Brighton, both teams were guilty of lacking a clinical final finish as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the post for the Gunners and Shane Duffy squandered the hosts' best chance late on. It means it was another clean sheet for the Arsenal defensive axis of Aaron Ramsdale, Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White, who have only conceded one goal in their last four Premier League games. Ramsdale had to be at his best in the final 10 minutes, making three saves to help his team to a gritty point. The result leaves Brighton in fifth place ahead of the international break and Arsenal in ninth.

Brighton moved up to third in the fledgling Premier League table after Neal Maupay's disputed penalty and Danny Welbeck's header sealed a 2-1 win over Leicester in an incident-packed encounter. Maupay's 35th-minute spot-kick was controversially awarded with Jannik Vestergaard punished for handball yet seemingly held back by the Seagulls striker, but Welbeck's second-half header (50) was legitimate reward for their dominance. Jamie Vardy finished a slick move on his 250th Premier League appearance to give the visitors a lifeline (61) but, having surrendered a two-goal lead in the Europa League in midweek, the Foxes were left to rue further decisions as a comeback of their own was scuppered at a sodden Amex Stadium. The penalty was coolly converted by Gross. Leeds, without Kalvin Phillips to injury, lacked the attacking spark to seriously trouble the hosts and Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay both wasted huge opportunities to take the game away from Marcelo Bielsa's men. Brighton's failure to convert those chances didn't cost them though as Welbeck popped up with the second goal, skilfully making a chance for himself before firing into the bottom corner.
