Liverpool offered ‘really promising’ Van Dijk update as former physio discusses knee ligament damage

Dave Galley spent four years at Anfield between 2001 and 2005 and has spoken with the Dutch defender as he works his way back to full fitness Virgil van Dijk’s recovery from knee ligament damage looks to be “really promising”, says former Reds physio Dave Galley, but the Premier League champions have been told it is still too early to put a possible date on the defender’s return to action. The commanding Netherlands international centre-half has been out of action since suffering an injury during a Merseyside derby date with Everton on October 17, 2020. Van Dijk has been forced under the knife since then and started out on a long road to recovery.

Chan 2021 Wrap: Uganda fail to break preliminary round jinx, Rwanda advance

The Cranes saw their ambition of earning a first-ever place in the quarter-finals ended by resilient Morocco Uganda failed again to advance to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship after a 5-2 defeat to Morocco. The Cranes needed a win against the reigning champions in order to book a place in the next phase after a 2-1 loss against Togo in the second group game complicated their chances of booking a maiden slot in the knockout phase. A brace from Soufiane Rahimi, goals from Ayoub El Kaabi, Hamza El Moussaoui and an own goal by Charles Lukwago gave the North Africans the victory as they aim to retain the title.

Klopp ‘won’t cry like a five-year-old kid’ if Liverpool don’t sign centre-back in January

The Reds manager admits a new centre-back would help his struggling side but the champions are unlikely to make any signings this month Jurgen Klopp admitted that a new centre-back would benefit Liverpool, but says the Reds’ recent slide has changed nothing in terms of the club’s ability to act in the transfer market. The reigning champions are in their worst run of form in four years, without a win in five Premier League matches and having failed to score in their last four. On Thursday, they lost their proud 68-game unbeaten home record, losing 1-0 to Burnley on a miserable night at Anfield. Title favourites a month ago, they now sit fourth, and could fall behind both Tottenham and Everton should those two teams win their games in hand.

Thiago is changing Liverpool to make them ‘WORSE’ – Didi Hamann

Thiago Alcantara is making Liverpool worse because he is everything that Jurgen Klopp's champions are not, claims former star Didi Hamann. Thiago arrived to huge fanfare when he completed his move from Bayern Munich in September, but has found his game time heavily restricted by injury so far. The Spaniard returned to action over the Christmas period, and it has coincided with Liverpool going three games without a goal and seeing their title defence fizzle out. Hamann, who was at Anfield from 1999 until 2006, believes that the 29-year-old, though a fine player, does not suit Klopp's set up and is slowing them down. He tweeted: 'Liverpool had a lot of possession for quite some time now and always found a way to break up defences. 'The dynamics of the team will chang...

Juventus end AC Milan unbeaten run

Federico Chiesa scored twice as champions Juventus produced a superb display to end AC Milan's unbeaten league run this season. The 23-year-old opened the scoring in the 18th minute when he played a fantastic one-two with Paulo Dybala before drilling home. Davide Calabria levelled with a great side-foot finish before Chiesa gave Juve the lead again with his low drive. Weston McKennie made certain of victory with a strike from close range. Milan remain top of Serie A by a point from city rivals Inter who earlier lost 2-1 at Sampdoria. Juve, who have endured a mixed start to the campaign, are now up to fourth - seven points behind Milan. Juve have won the past nine championships but hopes of making it 10 have taken a big knock this season after a handful of erratic d...

PSG travel to Old Trafford to face Group H leaders United in Manchester on Wednesday, with all eyes on star centre-forward Cavani. Jesus: Liverpool draw not a good result for Man City

The 23-year-old striker earned a point for his side with his equalising goal but believes his team should have sealed the win Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus was not satisfied with his side's 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. After Mohamed Salah converted a penalty just 13 minutes into the Premier League encounter to give the visitors the lead, Brazilian striker Jesus fired home the equaliser around the half-hour mark to earn a point for his side. But the 23-year-old feels his side should have done better against the defending champions, telling BBC Sport: "The result is not good for us, we know that because we are at home and have to try to win our games here but it was a tough game. They are the champions but we cannot drop these points."
