Hassan Rouhani Speaks Out: Donald Trump Cannot Cause Collapse Of Nuclear Deal

Iran said on Tuesday U.S. President Donald Trump cannot cause its nuclear deal with six major powers to collapse. “The nuclear deal will not collapse… Those who hope that Trump will cause its collapse, are wrong,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a speech broadcast live on State TV. In October, Trump declined to certify that Iran was complying with the nuclear agreement reached among Tehran, the U.S. and other powers in 2015. His decision triggered a 60-day window for Congress to decide whether to bring back sanctions on Iran. Congress passed the ball back to Trump by letting the deadline on reimposing sanctions on Iran passed on Dec. 12. Trump must decide in mid-January if he wants to continue to waive energy sanctions on Iran. Under the deal, nuclear-r...

US Senators To Press Rex Tillerson, Jim Mattis On New War Authority

President Donald Trump’s national security brain trust faces Congress on the need for a new war authorization as the deadly ambush in Niger is igniting a push among many lawmakers to update the legal parameters for combat operations overseas. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson are scheduled to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Monday. They told the panel behind closed doors three months ago that a 2001 law gave the military ample authority to fight terrorist groups. But that’s a position that won’t wash with a growing number of congressional Republicans and Democrats, many of whom were startled by the depth of the U.S. commitment in Niger and other parts of Africa. They’ve argued that the dynamics of the battlefield have shifted o...

Microsoft Drops Lawsuit After US Government Revises Data Request Transparency Rules

Microsoft said it will drop a lawsuit against the U.S. government after the Department of Justice (DoJ) changed data request rules on alerting internet users about agencies accessing their information. The new policy limits the use of secrecy orders and calls for such orders to be issued for defined periods, Microsoft Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith said in a blog post on Monday. “As a result of the issuance of this policy, we are taking steps to dismiss our lawsuit,” Smith said. The company expects the changes to end the practice of indefinite secrecy orders. Microsoft filed the lawsuit in April 2016 arguing that the U.S. government was violating the constitution by preventing the company from informing its customers about government requests for their emails and other document...

Iran’s Hassan Rouhani Excited Over EU’s Support For Nuclear Deal

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran on Tuesday welcomed European Union’s support for his country’s nuclear deal with international powers, in spite President Donald Trump casting doubt on the U.S. commitment to the agreement. “The unanimous support for the agreement, particularly from the Europeans, is an important political achievement for Iran,’’ Rouhani said in a statement on the presidency’s website on Tuesday. Foreign ministers of the EU signalled their resolve to keep the Iran nuclear deal intact on Monday, after Trump said he will urge Congress to toughen U.S. laws aimed at Iran. Trump’s move stopped short of pulling the plug on the nuclear agreement altogether. After his announcement, support for the deal flowed in from several countries, including from U.S. allies France,...

Trump Begins Tax Reform After Healthcare Failure

US President Donald Trump was set to roll out a proposal to overhaul the U.S. tax code on Wednesday after health care failure. Republican Party looks for a legislative victory in the face of repeated failures to repeal health care reforms instituted by predecessor Barack Obama. Trump was due to unveil details of the plan in a speech in the central U.S. state of Indiana following earlier promises to make the tax code more simple for individuals and to lower the rate for businesses. Republicans in Congress, who this week failed to secure enough votes on a renewed push to overhaul the health care law commonly known as Obamacare, said they would turn their attention to taxes, a common priority for the conservative party. “We plan to move forward on our next priority, which is refor...

Russia Vows Harsh Response To US Missions Closure

As the 48 hours given to Russia to close its San Francisco consulate and two other missions lapses today, Russia has said that it will respond “harshly” to any U.S. measures designed to hurt it. The warning, from Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, came as Russia said it was weighing a response to the U.S. move that will force it to shutter two trade missions in the United States as well as the San Francisco consulate by Sept. 2. U.S. has given Moscow 48 hours to close its San Francisco Consulate and and buildings in Washington and New York. “We’ll react as soon as we finish our analysis,” Lavrov told students in Moscow. “We will respond harshly to things that damage us.” Separately, a top Kremlin aide complained the U.S. demarche pushed bilateral ties further into a blind alley an...

CACOL, Others Urge Govt To Stop Funding Pilgrimage

The Executive Chairman of CACOL, Mr. Debo Adeniran, described the state sponsorship of pilgrimage as a form of corruption, which must be stopped. He said, “There are so many atrocities various administrations have been committing, including the sponsorship of pilgrimage. Such atrocities start from lowering the exchange rate for pilgrims. There is no government that has the authority to spend public funds on frivolities like religious tourism. Nigeria doesn’t have any religion, so any public fund spent on religious activities, building religious worship places and so on are resources wasted, misspent, misappropriated. “Every public office holder who has funded any religion has misappropriated resources and they are liable to be charged for misappropriation of funds. So the amount that...

Trump Goes On Road Trip To Sell Vague Tax Peform Plan

President Donald Trump hits the road Wednesday on a tour to sell tax reform to everyday Americans and lawmakers, but this campaign pledge is still very short on details. Trump will visit Springfield, Missouri a day after touring hurricane-ravaged southeastern Texas. An administration official said the goal of Trump’s speech in the Midwest is more to explain why America needs tax reform, rather than the nitty gritty of what he wants to change. “The president wants to take this conversation directly to the American people,” the official said. Trump will explain that the US tax code is simply broken and in fact six times longer than it was in 1955, the official said. The Trump administration’s stated goal is to adopt tax reform by the end of the year, but that’s a tall task bot...

White House Braces For Fallout From Trump Remarks On Virginia Violence

President Donald Trump no doubt pleased part of his political base on Tuesday by passionately arguing that both right- and left-wing extremists were responsible for violence at a white supremacist rally in Virginia on Saturday. But his remarks, one day after he, under pressure, explicitly condemned neo Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan, left White House officials bracing for fallout from disappointed Republicans whose support he needs to govern in the coming months and years. “Your base isn’t going to win you re-election … nor is it going to keep you a majority in Congress,” said one administration official. It was political reality that the controversy over Trump’s response would last for some time, he said. The remarks at Trump Tower in New York on Tuesday that sparked that reality at ...
