We Will Impose Fresh Nationwide Lockdown If COVID-19 Cases Continue To Rise- PTF

The Federal Government has said it will be left with no option than to impose a fresh lockdown in the country if the number of COVID-19 infections continues to spike. The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVIF-19, Sani Aliyu, stated this on Friday during a media briefing in Abuja. Aliyu said the rising Coronavirus infections was a source of concern and might require a fresh lockdown. He said, “If these numbers continue to go up and we start having significant deaths, we will have no option. However, until we see a decline in the number of positive cases, we shouldn’t relent. “We believe the lockdown was not effective because of the reality of a city where people go out to fend for themselves on a daily basis. If not, you will replace a health crisis with an economic crisis. “Concerning the number of positive r...

Egypt to reopen for international tourism

Egypt has announced it will gradually reopen for international tourism beginning on 1 July, although visiting tourists will initially only be allowed in resort towns on the Red Sea coast. Despite government and economic pressure on the country’s tourism sector to ready hotels across the country, the drive to reopen and invite visitors has prompted doubts from observers as Egypt is still in the throws of the pandemic. The country shut its airports on 19 March when Covid-19 cases began to rise, a blow to the vital tourism sector which makes up roughly 11% of GDP. Egypt’s national carrier, Egypt air lost $3bn in revenue due to the flight suspension, according to the country’s minister for civil aviation. The initial centre of the Covid-19 outbreak in Egypt was also linked to tour...

Chairman of the PTF, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, expressed uncertainties over the pandemic, urging the lawmakers to help extend the campaign to the grass roots. Coronavirus: India Overtakes Italy In Cases Amid Easing Of Lockdown

India has recorded close to 10,000 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking its total above that of Italy. The country now has the sixth-highest number of confirmed cases in the world, 236,657. There have been 6,649 deaths. The health system in Mumbai is on the verge of collapse while hospitals in the capital, Delhi, are reportedly running out of space. Meanwhile, shopping centres, places of worship, restaurants and offices will be allowed to reopen from Monday. For weeks, India's relatively low Covid-19 numbers had baffled experts. Despite the dense population, disease and underfunded public hospitals, there was no deluge of infections or fatalities. Although India has the sixth highest number of cases, it is 12th in fatalities, according to statistics from Jo...

COVID-19 Anti-Body Test Kits Failed Validation — Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire Says

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, on Thursday spoke about various test kits said to be in use in Nigeria for the control of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially antibody-based test kits. He was speaking in Abuja during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. The minister said all the four kits had been evaluated by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and that they all failed the validation tests. He said that no antigen test kits had yet been evaluated and “this means that results obtained from these tests are not tenable for diagnostics, being deficient in sensitivity and specificity and are likely to give false results and mislead people. “The NCDC certified laboratories in Nigeria use WHO recognized PCR testing methods which give reliable result. ...
