Man Utd vs Aston Villa: Solskjaer reveals why Fernandes took penalty instead of Ronaldo

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes took the penalty against Aston Villa, because “the decision was made before the game”. The Red Devils’ unbeaten start to this season ended on Saturday, thanks to a 1-0 defeat against the Midlands club at Old Trafford. Kortney Hause headed in a corner before giving away a late penalty, as referee Mike Dean penalized him for handball. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo still on the pitch, Fernandes took responsibility and blasted the ball into the stands. When asked if Fernandes was first choice to take the spot kick, Solskjaer told Sky Sports: “Yes. The decision was made before the game.” The result leaves United in fourth place with 13 points.

Laporta warns under-fire Barcelona boss Koeman he won’t be afraid to ‘make decisions’

The Camp Nou chief says the Dutchman's future in the dugout will "depend a lot" on results but also insists "we are behind him now" Barcelona president Joan Laporta has warned under-fire head coach Ronald Koeman that he won't be afraid to "make decisions" if the team's fortunes do not improve soon. Pressure is building on Koeman after Barca's poor start to the 2021-22 campaign, with a 1-1 draw at home to Granada on Monday marking the latest setback for the Spanish giants. Barca slipped to eighth in the La Liga standings after that result, and it has been suggested that Koeman is now on borrowed time as he struggles to find a winning formula following a summer of wholesale changes at Camp Nou.

EPL: Arsenal’s £50m signing, Ben White yet to prove anything – William Gallas

Former Arsenal captain, William Gallas, has questioned the club’s decision to spend £50million on their summer signing, Ben White. Gallas insisted that White, who joined Arsenal from Brighton in the summer transfer window, has not proved anything yet at Emirates. The former Chelsea defender also compared White, who endured a torrid start to his Arsenal career, struggling to handle the physical threat of Ivan Toney during an opening day defeat at Brentford, to Manchester United’s Raphael Varane. “It’s difficult for me to understand why Arsenal spent £50m on one player who is yet to prove himself at the top level and at the same time Manchester United can spend around £40m on Varane who won the World Cup and has four Champions League titles,” Gallas told GentingBet ahead of Arsena...

Attorney-general of the federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami in a statement released by his spokesperson Umar Gwandu said the decision is a "product of constitutionalism and the law." According to him, naming and shaming in the Nigerian context must be rooted in constitutionalism and there must be a balance between constitutional presumption of innocence and evidential proof of reasonable ground for suspicion in making disclosures associated with terrorism funding and financing. The statement read; “Naming and shaming of suspects is not embarked upon as a policy by the federal government out of sheer respect the constitutional rights of Nigerians relating to pre...

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wins re-election but falls short of a majority

Justin Trudeau has won a third term as Canada's prime minister, but his decision to hold election early didn't really pay off as his bid to win a majority of seats failed. The Liberals (Trudeau's party) won the most seats of any party, taking hold of 157 - the same number they won in 2019, and 13 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the House of Commons. The result means Trudeau, 49, and his second consecutive minority government will have to rely on other parties to govern. Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole, whose party placed second, conceded defeat as results trickled in late into the night. Early results indicated the Conservatives had 121 seats, the same number they won in 2019. The leftist New Democrats won 29, the Quebec-based Bloc Québécois were down three seats t...

EPL: Moyes reacts to Mark Noble’s missed penalty against Man Utd

West Ham manager, David Moyes, has defended his decision to bring on Mark Noble, to take a stoppage-time penalty against Manchester United. With virtually the last kick of the game, Noble was introduced from the bench to take the spot kick, after Luke Shaw was punished for handball. The midfielder saw his poor effort saved by David De Gea, as United won 2-1. Moyes has rejected talk that their recent record of four misses from their last five came into his mind when he made the decision. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “The thinking behind it? Look at his record. “I’d have been more disappointed if I hadn’t made the decision. “I made the decision, and it didn’t quite work today. I was more influenced by Noble’s record, rather than West Ham’s record.”

Roy Keane blasts West Ham’s Noble for missing penalty against Man Utd

Manchester United legend, Roy Keane, have slammed the decision for West Ham captain, Mark Noble, to take and miss a 95th-minute penalty against the Red Devils in the Premier League on Sunday. Noble was subbed on by West Ham manager, David Moyes, late on and immediately took the ball for the late spot-kick during the encounter, which was saved by David De Gea. But Keane believes it was a strange decision for Noble to take the penalty against Man United, adding that the player did not warm up properly before he was introduced into the game. Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half strike and a late goal from Jesse Lingard gave Man United all three points against West Ham at the London Stadium. “Strange decision, he can’t have warmed up properly because it was so late in the game. Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has explained why he benched Jadon Sancho for the West Ham clash on Sunday. Solskjaer said that he did not start Sancho in Man United’s 2-1 win against West Ham because of the player’s ability to make an impact off the bench. Sancho, who replaced Mason Greenwood in the second half against West Ham, had started Man United’s last three games against Wolves, Newcastle and Young Boys, respectively. “Jadon’s [Sancho] started the Tuesday game and we found the decision better to leave him here now and the chance to come on and make a difference if we need him to,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. With the game level at 1-1, the United manager replaced the Portuguese pair with Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard in the 72nd minute. Fernandes had assisted Ronaldo's opener in the first half, with the visitors needing a goal in Bern. It was a decision that puzzled Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, who said on Soccer Special: "Young Boys were petrified of Ronaldo but Lingard plays how l used to play - he will come back and get the ball, and that's not helping because you are down to 10 men already. "You want the ball going the other way because if the ball goes the other way then your opponents can sq...

Peter Schmeichel. Carlos Tevez. Abbie McManus. In either the men's or women's game, it's always a slightly controversial decision to switch sides in Manchester, but that is just the move defender Aoife Mannion made this summer. Having signed for Manchester City in 2019 from Birmingham City, Mannion was unable to make her mark on the blue side of the city. A serious ACL injury in October 2019 - just three months and 10 days after joining the club - saw her out of action until February this year, keeping her off the field for 458 days. She made just 11 appearances for City before leaving at the end of her contract last season. "It was a struggle two-fold - just the length of the injury lay-off and also that the rehab straddled the pandemic," Mannion explained ahead of Friday's B...
