It’s Normal they’re not happy – Tuchel reacts to Ziyech, Lukaku’s deep exchanges during draw with Brighton

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has played down the significance of Hakim Ziyech’s exchange with Romelu Lukaku during their Premier League game on Tuesday. Cameras captured both players deep in conversation during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton on Tuesday night. The Blues lost further ground in the title race as they laboured to a draw at the Amex Stadium. Moroccan forward, Ziyech scored for the Blues in the first half, but Brighton fired back in the second through Adam Webster’s header. And at a point, Ziyech and Lukaku, who were heavily criticized by their manager, Tuchel after Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend, were caught up in deep exchanges. And Tuchel was asked by BT Sport about the two players being deep in conversation, and the German manager ...

Chelsea produced a stunning first-half fightback to salvage a 2-2 draw against Liverpool as Manchester City's rivals served up a Premier League classic which did little for either sides' title aspirations. Liverpool looked on course to emerge as the primary challengers to City's crown as goals from Sadio Mane, who escaped a first-minute red card for an elbow on Cesar Azpilicueta, and Mohamed Salah saw the visitors race into a two-goal lead and silence Stamford Bridge inside the opening 26 minutes. Covid-hit Chelsea frustrated by Wolves draw

Chelsea were left frustrated by a 0-0 draw at Wolves that saw them slip further behind in the Premier League title race. Daniel Podence's first-half finish that was ruled out following a VAR check was as close as the game to a goal with incidents at a minimum in the Molineux fog. Chelsea pushed and probed for the goal but created very little against a resilient Wolves side and the draw means they are now six points adrift of leaders Manchester City. The build-up to the game had been overshadowed by Chelsea's failed attempt to get the match postponed because of seven positive Covid-19 cases in the squad. "It is very hard for us to understand," Thomas Tuchel told Sky Sports before the match. "We are very concerned about the health of the players."

Joe Cole, Jermaine Jenas predict club to win title after Chelsea’s draw with Everton

Former Premier League stars, Joe Cole and Jermaine Jenas have backed Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to defend their Premier League crown this season after Chelsea played a 1-1 draw with Everton on Thursday night. Second-half goals from Mason Mount and Jarrad Branthwaite ensured both Chelsea and Everton shared a point each at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are currently in the third position on the Premier League table with three points behind Liverpool and four points behind leaders Man City after 17 games. When asked on BT Sport who will win the league in May, Cole said: “I am gonna say Man City. That is the first time I have deviated from my [initial prediction of Chelsea]. “The fact Chelsea have dropped these points… and when I watched Man City the other night [against Leeds], ...

Champions League: Why draw was repeated – Iker Casillas

Former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper, Iker Casillas has provided the reason the Champions League draw was repeated. The former goalkeeper said the draw was repeated because “something did not go well”. He believes European football’s governing body eventually made the right decision to repeat the procedure after an error was spotted the first time. “[The draw] was repeated because something did not go well. In the interests of the club, the first ball is not the next. “It is clear that they repeat it, because it was the most normal thing to do,” he said at the LaLiga TwentyNine event. Casillas’ former club, Real Madrid, will face Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the competition in February.

Gernot Rohr’s sack: Uncertainty as Nigeria search for new coach

Gernot Rohr is gone. The Franco-German is no longer the Super Eagles head coach, following a virtual meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on Sunday. But it feels Rohr should have been gone since 2018, after Nigeria failed to qualify from their World Cup group. The team needed a draw against Argentina to progress. Somehow, they conceded a late goal and duly crashed out. Another good time to have sacked him, was after the 4-4 draw with Sierra Leone in November 2020. Rohr’s men threw away a four-goal lead, a result that NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, described as the worst under his tenure. Yet, Pinnick didn’t act. The Leone Stars also held the Super Eagles to a 0-0 draw in Freetown. It essentially meant the three-time African champions failed to win a single game throughout 202...

Leicester thrash Newcastle 4-0

Leicester left Newcastle still rooted in the Premier League relegation zone with a 4-0 thrashing of the Magpies on Sunday, while West Ham’s Champions League ambitions were dented by a 0-0 draw at Burnley. Despite being hit by a coronavirus outbreak that left Brendan Rodgers without seven players, the Foxes gave Eddie Howe another reminder of the task he faces to keep Newcastle in the top flight as Youri Tielemans struck twice at the King Power. Howe will be able to call on the resources of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund in the January transfer window and results elsewhere this weekend mean they remain just three points adrift of safety. But Newcastle face Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in their next three games and, on this form, will be lucky to escape that...

West Ham held by Burnley in goalless draw

West Ham missed the chance to cement their spot in the top four after being held 0-0 by Burnley, who still have only one win to their name this season. Starting the day fourth but level on points with Manchester United, this was a chance to pull three points clear of their top-four rivals but quality in forward areas was lacking from the Hammers at Turf Moor. Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was only called upon to make three saves but was in top form to deny Issa Diop, Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen while quelling West Ham's threat from set-pieces with some outstanding catches under pressure. Burnley failed to threaten but did almost nick a winner when Jay Rodriguez couldn't turn home Charlie Taylor's cross as the game ticked into stoppage time. They remain in 18th p...

Jorginho penalties punish Leeds in thriller

Jorginho scored two penalties – the second in injury-time – to nab Chelsea an important and dramatic 3-2 win over a spirited Leeds. The victory leaves Chelsea in third but just two points behind Manchester City at the top of the table After conceding six goals in their last two games, Chelsea's defence were breached again when Raphinha netted from the penalty spot on 28 minutes following a challenge on Dan James by Marcos Alonso Thomas Tuchel's side looked nervous as they staged a response, but Mason Mount scored what looked a crucial equaliser just before the break when turning home Alonso's cross. They were ahead on 58 minutes when Jorginho converted from the penalty after a VAR review had deemed Raphinha's challenge on Antonio Rudiger a foul that was originally missed by r...

Azpilicueta urges Chelsea response after slip-ups

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has urged his teammates to show an immediate response after falling off the top of the Premier League and finishing a disappointing second in their Champions League group. The European champions twice surrendered the lead in Russia on Wednesday to draw 3-3 with Zenit Saint Petersburg and end their Group H campaign as runners-up, meaning they could face Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. The frustrating result came after they dropped to third in the Premier League table following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at West Ham, spoiling their impressive defensive record so far this season. Thomas Tuchel’s men, who host Leeds on Saturday, have now failed to win three of their past five Premier League games. Azpilicueta has demanded a reaction...
