Multichoice Nigeria said this year’s winner will go home with the grand prize of N90 million. MultiChoice Nigeria Limited has said it will consider three television stations on its DSTV platform. The decision followed a parley organized by the management of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) between MultiChoice and CNG. Recall that CNG had in a petition accused MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, owners and operators of DSTV, of not featuring any northern-owned television channels on its DSTV platform, saying its “nepotistic business disposition” marginalised the North in the pay TV sector. NBC, upon receiving the petition, called for a meeting between the two parties. A proposed law to give the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission the sole power to decide the per-view cost for Digital Satellite Television Services, DSTV and other Broadcasting outfits in the country, is before the House of Representatives. The bill exclusively obtained by VANGUARD on Monday, is sponsored by Rep. Unyime Idem (PDP-Akwa Ibom). The Bill amends Section 2(1) of the Principal Legislation to read that the NBC, will “regulate and review through its broadcasting codes, the tariff being charged by the Digital Satellite Television Services and other broadcasting outfits in Nigeria and subscription policy for subscribers”. DSTV/GOTV To Shut Down June 2019

The Federal Government may have notified the management of MultiChoice DSTV/GOTV that their operations, in Nigeria, will come to an end in 2019 as their license expires June next year. According to a letter to that effect issued, on Tuesday, by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation(NBC), the license issued to them in 2014 by NBC will not be renewed because it was not in line with Digital Switch Over (DSO) White Paper. If Multichoice DSTV/GOTV will ever operate in Nigeria again after expiration of its license, the only option left for them is to go to licensed Signal Distribution company, that is Pinnacle Communications Ltd or ITS. GOTV has been accused of being used as a conduit to siphon foreign exchange from Nigeria by its parent company, South African Multi Choice DSTV.

The management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), on Tuesday urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to deregulate the ownership of electricity meters in the country. MultiChoice Africa is said to be having discussions with MTN, South African telecommunications company, regarding the sale of the company. Naspers Limited, parent company of MultiChoice Africa is the franchise owner of DStv and GOtv. The offer of MultiChoice Africa will not affect the South African division of the TV network although the plans have not been made public. “A sale is one of a number of options being considered by Africa’s biggest company by market value, and a final decision hasn’t been reached.
