DR Congo hit by fresh EBOLA OUTBREAK

DR Congo reported a fresh Ebola outbreak in the northwest part of the country on Monday. This is the 11th Ebola outbreak in the vast central African country, and coming just weeks before it had hoped to declare the end of the 10th outbreak in the country. Health Minister Eteni Longondo said that “four people have already died” from Ebola in a district of the northwestern city of Mbandaka. “The National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) has confirmed to me that samples from Mbandaka tested positive for Ebola,” Longondo told a press conference on Monday. “We will send them the vaccine and medicine very quickly,” he said, adding that he planned to visit the site of the outbreak at the end of the week. Sierra Leone Lifts Ban on Pregnant Girls Attending School

A ban on pregnant girls attending school was overturned in Sierra Leone on Monday March 30, following a fight spearheaded by human rights activists for five years. A statement which overturned the ban read;   The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education... hereby announces that the ‘ban on pregnant girls attending school’ is overturned with immediate effec...

Spokesman of the NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye said the directive was contained in a letter signed by the NCAA Director General, Capt. Muhtar Usman to all airline operators. In the letter, NCAA directed airlines’ Pilots in Command (PIC) to report to Air Traffic Control (ATC) any suspected case of communicable disease on board their flight in line...

DR Congo Declares Ebola Outbreak Over

Democratic Republic of Congo declared its two-month Ebola outbreak officially over Saturday after 42 days without recording a new case of the disease. The outbreak in Congo’s remote northeastern forests, a record eighth for the country where the disease was first discovered in 1976, killed four out of the eight people infected, Health Minister Oly Ilunga said in a statement. “I declare on this day, at midnight, the end of the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever of the Ebola virus in DRC,” Ilunga said. Congolese health authorities approved the use of a new experimental vaccine but ultimately declined to deploy it because of the small scale of the outbreak and logistical challenges. The latest outbreak came a year after the end of the virus’ deadliest episode in West Africa, which ...
