NCAA Issues Ebola Alert To Airlines, Calls For Vigilance

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued warning to airlines over the resurgence of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). This followed the World Health Organization (WHO’s) declaration of Ebola outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). Consequently, the NCAA directed all operators, especially airlines operating regional and international flights into the country, to exercise a high level of vigilance. Spokesman of the NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye said the directive was contained in a letter signed by the NCAA Director General, Capt. Muhtar Usman to all airline operators. Researchers Generate Antibodies To Ebola Virus Disease

In a breakthrough that could lead to a simple and inexpensive test for Ebola virus disease, researchers have generated two antibodies to the deadly virus. According to a report published in the ScienceDaily, the team of researchers from Loyola University, Chicago, USA, said the antibodies, which are inexpensive to produce, potentially could be used in a simple filter paper test to detect Ebola virus and the related Marburg virus. Using a technology called cell-free ribosome display, the researchers generated two synthetic antibodies that bind to all six Ebola and Marburg viruses. The research involved the use of non-hazardous proteins that sit on the surface of Ebola and Marburg viruses. ECOWAS Ministers of Health and Environment will converge on Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Saturday to formalise the implementation of the “One Health” approach in the region. Ahead of Saturday, a preparatory meeting of the ECOWAS Policy Coordination Platform on ‘One Health’ approach is underway in Abuja. The platform brings together experts from human health, animal health and environment sectors.
