Mali’s constitutional court names coup leader, Colonel Assimi Goita as country’s transitional President

Colonel Assimi Goita, leader of the post-coup junta in Mali has been named as the country's transitional President by the constitutional court. The ruling issued late on Friday May 28, said Assimi Goita would “lead the transition process to its conclusion” and carry the title of “president of the transition, head of state”. The court said Goita who led the first coup last August, which saw the elected President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta forced out of office, was named as the transitional President due to the "vacancy in the presidency". The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday said it had concluded arrangements to resume Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) on Monday, June 28. Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Student Macheted to Death

A yet-to-be-identified student of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, in Owo, Ondo State, was macheted to death by some unknown persons on Wednesday, February 10. Confirming the incident to newsmen, the public relations officer of the institution, Samuel Ojo, said the reason for the attack is yet to be ascertained. Ojo dismissed rumours that the killing might be connected with the Student Union Government elections which is holding this week.
