We have no excuse, we have to restructure Nigeria — Governor El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has called for the restructuring of Nigeria which he said will strengthen federalism and achieve national cohesion and healthy subnational competition.   The Kaduna state Governor who said this at a public lecture to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Arewa House held in Kaduna on Saturday October 31, back his campaign for restructuring with the 2018 recommendations of the APC committee.   El-Rufai recalled that the APC Committee on True Federalism proposed significant devolution of powers between the national government and the 36 States, and recommended further devolution of responsibilities between the States and Local Governments depending on local circumstances, culture, capacity and capability.  The Governor further stated that they have...

This is Not the Democracy we Fought for – Gani Adams

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams has said the struggles to free Nigerians from bondage will continue until the country is restructured. Adams said this in his June 12 message, describing the June 12, 1993 annulled election as the most defining moment in Nigeria’s history. In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, Adams lamented that democracy was yet to take its roots in Nigeria despite the sacrifices of the activists. According to him, democracy in Nigeria is evolving but not what was fought for during June 12 struggle. He, however, expressed optimism that Nigeria can progress when federating states develop at their own pace. The statement read in part: “When the federating units are allowed to develop at their own pace, there will ...

June 12: Nigeria Must be Restructured to Federating Units – Gani Adams Explodes

To free Nigerians from “bondage”, Nigeria must be restructured into federating units. This is according to the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, in a statement sent to DAILY POST on Thursday in commemoration of the June 12, 1993, anniversary. He expressed joy that part of the dreams of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), has been realized with the official naming of June 12 as the Democracy Day. Adams, however, regretted that despite the sacrifices of the activists and pro-democracy groups, democracy is yet to take its root in Nigeria. He stated that Nigeria can only get it right with true federalism, pointing out that the only way out of the political logjam is to let the federating states develop at their own pace. Adams noted that when federating units are ...

Why Southern, Northern Leaders are Backing Atiku -Clarke

Elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clarke, has shed more light on the recent endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by Southern and Northern Leaders Forum for the February 16 poll. Clarke, who spoke weekend while playing host in Abuja  to South South Leaders resident in FCT led by the former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro,  said the leaders drawn from all  the six geo-political zones of the country settled for Atiku because of his firm  belief to restructure the country. He stated that of all the presidential candidates, Atiku stood out as one that had expressed his commitment to restructure the nation once elected into office. According to him, it took the elders and leaders of thought four weeks to examine the programmes of the 17 pre...

Osinbajo And A Proper Understanding Of The Restructuring Debate

The issues surrounding restructuring in Nigeria have remained topical at least since 1999, but it assumed a new level of resonance recently as the 2019 general elections approach. As expected, different pressure groups, socio-cultural associations and politicians have joined the fray. The most discernible motive for the high tempo in the resurgence of discourse about restructuring mainly centres around the ploy by some opposition politicians to take advantage of it to harangue the Buhari/Osinbajo administration as if all Nigeria’s problems will be solved with restructuring. In their attempt to pull wool over our eyes on the topical issue and profit from it politically, they have tried to hinge the myriad of problems besetting Nigeria on restructuring, thereby insisting that the Buhari/Osin...

Osinbajo Misrepresented Restructuring —Nkanga

Uyo—FORMER Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State,  Air  Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, has faulted a statement by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that the solution to Nigeria’s problem was not geographical restructuring but proper management of resources, saying that Osinbajo  misrepresented the restructuring Nigerians are advocating.   Nkanga, also Chairman Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, who spoke to Vanguard yesterday in Uyo, explained that what the different sections of the country are clamouring for is fiscal federalism and true federalism, and not geographical restructuring as expressed by Vice President Osinbajo.   He wondered why the VP left out the first two and most important pillars of restructuring even after admitting in his statement...

Reconfiguration Not Meant To Divide Nigeria – Nwabueze

Elder stateman Prof. Ben Nwabueze has explained that the agitation for restructuring is not to divide the country. In a statement yesterday to mark the country’s 57th independence, he said the object of the demand is to reform the governmental structures and attune them to the needs and wishes of the people. He said: “The demand is to ensure that the immense diversity of ethnic nationalities comprised in the state will continue to co-exist together in peace, prosperity and progress as citizens of one country united by common interests, common aspirations and a common destiny.” Nwabueze, who is the chairman of The Patriots, urged the authorities to use the clamour to establish appropriate platforms to renegotiate suitable governmental structures. This, he said, was needed for th...

Restructuring: North Wants Status Quo – Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, says he believes the North is against the restructuring of Nigeria. Ajimobi, at the third annual lecture of Dauda Adegbenro Foundation in Ibadan, said the North was opposed the agitation because it wanted the status quo sustained. The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Gbade Ojo, stated that Nigeria’s current political system has robbed states of revenues. “Unless there is a reform, the second tier of government will continue to depend on handouts from the federation account”, he said. Ajimobi insisted that solid mineral deposits are supposed to belong to states where they are found but the 1999 Constitution had given that ownership rights to the federal government. He said amending the constitution would make states get invo...

Sen. Remi Tinubu Seeks True Federalism

Senator Oluremi Tinubu representing Lagos Central Senatorial District has called for an amendment of the constitution to make Nigeria a true federal state. She said while the nation’s laws and constitution expressly declare that Nigeria is a federal state, the practical application of most of the laws effectively makes Nigeria more or less a unitary state. Speaking on the theme: ‘Governance and national development: issues and implications’, at the University of Lagos’ 12th Annual Research Conference and Fair, in Lagos, on Tuesday, Senator Tinubu defended the current clamour for true federalism in some quarters. She said the different ethnic tribes were independent and relatively politically-sophisticated before the advent of the colonialists. She lamented that the incursion of...

How To Get Nigeria Out Of Recession – Expert

A former Director, Regional Office for Africa, UN-Habitat, Professor Oyebanji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, has urged the Federal Government to concentrate on industrial manufacturing and not agriculture to move faster towards economic growth and exit recession. Oyelaran-Oyeyinka said this while speaking at the distinguished lecture series of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair of Governance, held at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, on Monday. He decried failed years of unsustainable industrial manufacturing and commission of industrial errors such as embarking on complex, capital-intensive plants without commensurate human and technological capacity, planning based on assumptions, and introduction of wrong policies. Furthermore, he identified structural weakn...

APC Not Against True Federalism – Oyegun

John Odigie-Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said the party was not opposed to true federalism as perceived in some quarters across the country. He stated this on Thursday in Abuja while inaugurating a 24-member committee on True Federalism to articulate the party´s position on the restructuring of the country as agitations in that regard increased. According to Odigie-Oyegun, it is only the APC that can claim ownership to the principle and the need for true federalism in the country. “When we sat down to discuss the union of the APC, it was one of the principal issues that were almost like a no-go-item that we negotiated and agreed. “And as such, the constitution and the manifestos of the party are very elaborate in their references to true...

Calls For Restructuring Lack Clarity Of Definition – Arewa CF

Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has said the apologists of the restructuring of Nigeria are yet to clearly define the meaning of the concept in the present democratic setting. According to the ACF, the calls for restructuring appear to have varying meanings to different groups. A statement released after its national executive counci meeting on Wednesday in Kaduna said the only acceptable restructuring is one that will enhance unity, harmony and peace among Nigerians. “ACF has observed with keen interest the current nationwide debate on the term, restructuring of the country, as being canvassed by some people, groups and even prominent citizens. The term, however, means different things to different people or groups,” read the statement signed by Mohammed Biu, ACF publicity secreta...

Southeast Group Slams IBB Over Calls For Nigeria’s Restructuring

The Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA) has faulted former military president Ibrahim Babangida over his call for restructuring of Nigeria. In a statement in Enugu signed by its Secretary, Evang. Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the group said Babangida belonged to the club of the elite who bluntly refused to accept that the style, manner and format of the creation of the existing 36 states were a huge source of grief to millions of Nigerians and therefore, the real bone of contention. Gen Babangida (rtd) had on Monday said the time had come for Nigeria to be restructured. Babaginda, who urged leaders across the aggrieved parts of the country to show maturity, insisted that war is not a “joke anyone should toy with.” Reacting, however ECA noted that any restructuring that tended to mainta...

Biafra Agitators, Arewa Youths Will Run Away If They See War – Ex-DIG

Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Udom Ekpoudom, has warned Biafra agitators and Northern youths issuing threats and provocative speeches against Nigeria to take caution. He said while it was easy to speak of violence, such persons will run away if they witnessed bloodletting on a large scale. Ekpoudom appealed to agitators for Biafra to continue to draw attention of the Federal Government to issues of neglect and marginalization, instead of issuing threats to split the country. He faulted the sit-at-home order issued by Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), saying the order also contravened the law. Ekpoudom said IPOB had no constitutional authority to order a section of the country to sit at home without the consent of the Federal Government, adding that “It amo...

War Drums, The Lies Of History And The Last Nigerian

It is said that history repeats itself, first, as tragedy and then as farce. We are now in the farcical stage. Historical lies are fuelling our latter-day war drums; threatening the fragile foundations of our sinking ship of state. We do not realise that no nation in history has survived two civil wars. One of the biggest lies of all is that the January 1966 coup was not a tribal jamboree. It may well be that the likes of Majors Chukwuma Nzeogwu and Emmanuel Ifeajuna made themselves believe that their bout of ethnic cleansing was a “revolution”. But what kind of revolution was it that targeted officers and politicians almost exclusively from only one region with such coldblooded, unrepentant violence? Wise men always look to what people do rather than what they say. The “revenge” cou...

June 12: Afenifere Laments Anti-Igbo Threat, Insists On Restructuring

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has lamented that it is sad that Nigeria is now marking another June 12, 24 years after the annulment of the freest and fairest presidential poll won by late Chief MKO Abiola, amidst an October 1 quit order to Ndigbo by Arewa youths, who have also secured endorsement from the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). This was just as the group declared that the country had fumbled and wobbled through 18 years of pretending that its unity was settled, restating the Yoruba nation’s belief that the only way that Nigeria would be able to fulfill its destiny as one country was for all Nigerian nationalities to run their lives according to their civilisations in a restructured polity that practices federalism in its truest for...
