The Fingerprint Reader On Your Phone May Not Be As Secure As You Think

I love using the fingerprint scanner on my phone. When I’m trying to pull up a recipe while cooking or have a drink in my hand, it makes getting into my phone simple while keeping it secure. But it seems that it may not be as secure as we think. The same way that people have been able to fool face-recognition sensors with facsimiles of faces, researchers have developed a set of “master” fingerprints – like a master key – that shows some flaws in the process. Researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a set of fake digital fingerprints that put together the common features found in many fingerprints. With these digital composites, the team was able to get matches 65 percent of the time in their simulation. This is just a simulation, and the New York Times says that exper...

Rumour has it the next TECNO PhonePad will be a premium phablet and it is set to be released. Sources say it may be coming with a 3GB RAM as well as a Fingerprint sensor for added security. From the leaked image we’ve gotten, it will be a 7-inch screen pad with a 13MP rear camera. This image of the next TECNO PhonePad somehow made its way online before its official release and the design is nothing short of stunning. When zoomed closely we observed the body had tiny lines in the form of a wiredrawing making the phablet look even more unique. As with all TECNO devices the next PhonePad is expected to come in champagne gold colour as well. If speculations are right, this is a massive statement from TECNO with the 13MP back camera and Fingerprint sensor, not forgotten the much more improve...

Fingerprint Data At Risk In ‘Peace’ Photos

Japanese researchers say they have successfully copied fingerprint data from a digital picture of a person flashing a two-fingered "V" or peace sign, raising questions about the potential theft of such information. "One can use it to assume another identity, such as accessing a smartphone or breaking and entering into a restricted area such as an apartment," Isao Echizen, a professor at Japan's National Institute of Informatics, told Reuters Television. Flashing a two-finger peace sign is common among Japanese when posing for a photo. Echizen and fellow researcher Tateo Ogane reproduced an experiment on Friday in which they extracted Echizen's fingerprints from a digital photograph taken at a distance of three metres. The high-resolution photograph was taken with a 135mm ...
