2023: OBJ, PDP leaders in closed door meeting

As the 2023 presidential election draws nearer, former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday, August 19, had a closed door meeting with the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, and other leaders of the party in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The PDP chairman and the other leaders of the party arrived at the penthouse of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta at about few minutes past noon. The visit comes after some leaders of the party called for the removal of Secondus as chairman. Obasanjo who was a founding member of the PDP, denounced his membership of the party in February 2015.

A group of lawyers has asked the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to withdraw the invitation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, as speakers for its annual conference. This comes a few days after the NBA withdrew its invitation to Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, as a speaker at the conference following an outcry by some lawyers who said the governor stands against what the profession represents. The Peoples Democratic Party has apologised to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for ‘‘bad conduct and mistreatment,’’ Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s Media Aide, has said. Akinyemi made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta and made available to newsmen. About a week after the Federal Government announced the release of N72bn as its counterpart fund for the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line, the Export-Import Bank of China has approved $1.275bn (about N408bn) loan for the project on behalf of the Chinese government.
