A man from Massachusetts, USA who tried to scam the US government using a Covid-19 business aid scheme and faked his own death to evade authorities has been sentenced to 56 months in prison. David Staveley falsely claimed to co-own four large businesses in need of nearly $544,000 (£399,000) so he could get financial support from a federal government programme that helped out businesses affected by covid-19. Enacted between March 2020 and May 2021, the US Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) allowed small businesses hit hard by the pandemic to apply for low-interest private loans to cover payroll and other costs. Fraud in the UK has sparked a warning of “national security threat” after £754m was stolen from bank customers during the first half of this year, a 30% rise on the same period in 2020. According to UK Finance, fraudsters had capitalised on the coronavirus pandemic, with criminals targeting children as young as 14 via social media to become money mules. The banking body said the losses from bank transfer scams leapt by 71% to £355m during the first half of the year, almost £2m a day. There were a total of 106,164 cases of such fraud, equivalent to 12 people being defrauded every half an hour. EFCC arrests two suppected fraudsters in Ondo

Two suspected fraudsters have been arrested in Ondo State by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. One of the suspected fraudsters was arrested in Akure, the State capital over his alleged involvement in internet scam popularly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’. The second suspect who claimed to be an Engineer was also acc of financial fraud running into millions of naira. The EFCC officials who reportedly arrived in Akure following intelligence arrested the suspects at different locations within the metropolis. Following the arrest, the suspects were moved to ‘A’ Division Police Station before being whisked to the EFCC Ibadan zonal office, Oyo State.

Multiple Twitter users have reported that a groom at the wedding they attended was kidnapped by fraudsters, known as Yahoo boys. According to eye witness accounts, the wedding was holding at a hotel in Abeokuta when the Yahoo boys arrived in a Mercedes-Benz and bundled the groom into the car.   The groom is said to have played a fast one on the Yahoo Boys, making them lose money, hence the abduction.   See tweets below.

Banks Lose N5bn To Fraudsters In Nine Months – NDIC

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) yesterday said banks in the country lost over N5 billion to fraudsters between January and September 2020. It said the losses, for only nine months, was comparable to the financial losses insured institutions suffered for the entire 12 months of 2019. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has deported 17 out of 29 persons arrested in Ho, the Volta Regional capital for their alleged involvement in cyber crimes, known in Nigeria as ‘yahoo, yahoo’. According to The Ghanaian Times, the Nigerians were handed over to the GIS for screening, following their arrest to determine their immigration status. EFCC Arrests Six Suspended Internet Fraudsters In Lagos

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, has arrested six members of a syndicate of Internet fraudsters. The suspects were arrested at the Iyana Era, Badagry area of Lagos State. The suspects, Samuel Ndubisi, Samuel Gaza Tanko, Efe Godwin Okoye, Onyekachi Emanuel, Sari Isaac Felix and Ahmed Quadri, were arrested during a sting operation carried out by operatives of the Commission on February 13, 2019. Items recovered from the suspects at the point of arrest include laptops and mobile phones. According to the EFCC, the six suspected internet fraudsters will soon be charged to court as soon as investigations

EFCC Arrests 8 Yahoo Boys in Ilorin, Kwara State

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested 8 suspected yahoo boys in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. The suspected internet fraudsters were arrested following a tip-off and surveillance carried out around Irewolede, Ilorin, Kwara State. The suspects, who were rounded up at about 9.35pm on February 11, 2019 include, Chimezie Paul, 19; Oluwakayode Adebayo, 25; Mustapha Akeem, 19; Ezedigboo Paschal, 19; Mustapha Suleiman, 21; Mohammed Umar Faruk, 25; Abolarin Samuel Sunday, 23, and Anolarin Ridwan Gbolahan, 25. The Ekiti State police command has uncovered a ritualists’ den in Odo, a suburb in Ado Ekiti, the state capital and arrested two suspected ritualists. Ahead of the Yuletide, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has launched total war on Yahoo Boys who specialise in defrauding unsuspecting foreigners on the internet, Punch Metro reports. The operation codenamed ‘Cyber Storm’, will involve EFCC operatives monitoring suspicious transactions especially by youths who cannot explain their source of wealth.
