#TwitterBan: We are monitoring closely repression, access to information, media freedom and disregard for rule of law in Nigeria – Commonwealth

The Secretary-General of the Cinghas said that they closely monitoring certain repressive developments in Nigeria. This came after an urgent appeal by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) over Twitter ban in the country. SERAP had asked the Commonwealth to "apply its charter and hold the Nigerian government to account over the unlawful suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, and the resulting repression of freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom.” Responding to this, Ms Scotland said; “We are closely monitoring developments around the suspension of Twitter, and allegations of repression of the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, media freedom, as well as disregard for the rule of law in Nigeria. Kidnapped Kaduna First Class Traditional Ruler Regains Freedom

Gyet Maude, the kidnapped traditional ruler of Jaba Chiefdom in Kaduna State has regained his freedom. LIB had reported that the 83-year-monarch Jaba Chiefdom was kidnapped on Monday July 26, on his farm at Gitata community in Nasarawa State. He was released by his abductors on Wednesday evening, July 28, after spending two days with his abductors who had demanded for N100m ransom. A source within the traditional council, Anthony Maude, told Channels Television that the monarch returned to his palace along with some of his aides. It is however not clear if any ransom was paid or if the royal father was rescued by security operatives.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has kicked against National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) directive for broadcast stations to stop reporting details of attacks by bandits and insurgents. Recall that the NBC had in a letter dated July 7 and signed by Francisca Aiyetan, Director of Broadcast Monitoring, directed radio and television stations not to “glamourise the nefarious activities of insurgents, bandits and kidnappers” in their reports. Kidnapped Delta University Students Regain Freedom

The Delta State University (DELSU), students who were kidnapped along the Oria-Abraka Road on Sunday night have regained freedom. The two victims identified as Divine Omajuwa and Husseina Hamza of Geology and Pharmacology Departments respectively were reportedly abducted while on their way to school. They were released on Tuesday at midnight. One of their friends, Stephen Odje, who was in their company, was shot dead during the attack. The acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Bright Edafe confirmed their release, DSP Edafe added that no arrest has been made as investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Two kidnapped Kaduna nurses regain freedom after 80 days in bandits’ den

Two nurses who were kidnapped while on night duty at Doka General Hospital in Kajuru area of Kaduna State, have regained freedom after 80 days in bandits’ den. The two nurses identified as Afiniki Bako and Grace Nkut, were kidnapped in April. The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives ( NANNM), Kaduna State Chapter, Chairman Comrade, Ishaku Yakubu said they were released on Saturday, 10th July at about 7:00pm. No additional ransom was paid to the kidnappers apart from the 10 million naira earlier paid to them. Yakubu also disclosed that two motorcycles were given to the bandits before they were released.

Another Ekiti Monarch Abducted by gunmen

The traditional ruler of Eda-Ile Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area, Benjamin Osho was on Friday June 25 abducted by gunmen. Ekiti police spokesperson, Sunday Abutu said the monarch was abducted from his farm alongside his wife by gunmen. The monarch’s wife was said to have been immediately released by the gunmen apparently to enable her to mobilize for payment of ransom. The 400-level student of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Olayinka Toyinbo, who was abducted by suspected kidnappers, has regained freedom. LIB reported that the student of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, was abducted on Saturday, May 22, from a private Farm in Abule Itoko, a village in Odeda Local Government where he had been working and living for the past three years. President Buhari has said the  Gimba Yau Kumo, declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) over an alleged $65 million fraud is no longer his son-in-law. Abducted Mission School student regain freedom

The student of Kings School otherwise known as Capro Secondary Mission School located at Gana Ropp in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on April 29, has regained freedom. LIB reported earlier that 4 students were kidnapped during the attack but while three of the students escaped,  one remained in captivity. Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, Major Ibrahim Shittu said on Sunday May 2 that troops rescued the remaining student in captivity on Saturday May 1. Shittu who said no ransom was paid to secure the student’s release, added that the rescued student is in good health condition and has since been reunited with other students in the college.

Abducted Benue University Students Released

The three students of Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) in Benue state, who were abducted from the school premises have regained their freedom. Their release was confirmed by Benue police public relations officer,  Catherine Anene on Wednesday April 28. Anene said the students were freed on Tuesday April 27 with no ransom paid. Kidnapped Hotelier, Wife, Children, Others Regain Freedom in Oyo

The owner of Agbo Hotel in Ogbomoso in Oyo State, Oyedokun Oyeniyi; his wife, Busayo Oyedokun, and seven others including their children that were kidnapped by unknown gunmen, have regained their freedom. LIB had earlier reported that the gunmen stormed the hotel on Saturday night, April 24 and abducted the victims. Confirming their release, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Adewale Osifeso, said “Yes, they have been released,” he said. Osifeso did not, however, disclose whether ransom was paid before the release of the victim.

Kidnapped Ekiti Monarch Regains Freedom after 5 Days

Kidnapped Traditional Ruler of Ilemeso in Ekiti State, David Oyewunmi has regained freedom after spending five days in captivity. LIB reported earlier that Oyewunmi was kidnapped on April 16 at his palace after gunmen scaled the fence of the palace.
