Gaza violence Restarts as Israel Fires Airstrikes at Hamas targets after fire balloons are dropped on Israeli territory

Israel’s Defense Forces(IDF) launched a series of airstrikes into Gaza after a balloon attack sent incendiary devices floating into southern Israel. The balloon attacks sparked nearly two-dozen fires in Israel. The strike which happened early Wednesday morning local time, June 16, targeted Hamas military compounds, according to the IDF. Explosions lit the night sky above buildings in Gaza City as Israeli forces shelled the Palestinian enclave. The targets were used by Hamas' Khan Yunis and Gaza Brigades for "terror activities," according to the IDF. The unrest comes after an Israeli nationalist march in East Jerusalem that celebrated the 1967 capture of the city. "The Hamas terror organization is responsible for all events transpiring in the Gaza Strip, and will b...

Retired Nigerian striker, Ibezito Ogbonna, survives after his house in Israel was hit by a rocket from Gaza

Former Nigeria under-23 striker Ibezito Ogbonna was hospitalized after his house in Ashdod,  Israel, was hit by a rocket fired from Gaza last week. The 38-year-old, who won the Israeli Cup with Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2006 and 2007, was at home with his wife and two young daughters when the building was hit by a rocket. His wife and children were unharmed but Ibezito was injured. Footage from the scene shows Ibezito Ogbonna being taken to the hospital after his apartment was hit by a rocket. He was in the hospital for a few hours where he was treated and had different tests done before being released. His apartment was also destroyed and with no home to return to, Ogbonna, who has Israeli citizenship, and his family, are now staying at a hotel.

Scenes of horror unfold in Gaza as Israel-Palestinian conflict marks its deadliest day

Data from Israeli authorities and the Palestinian Health Ministry have revealed that Israel bombed the house of Hamas' Gaza leader and obliterated a family's home in Gaza as Hamas launched more than 100 rockets toward Israel on Sunday May 16, marking the deadliest day of the week-long conflict so far. Two Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least 43 Palestinians -- including eight children -- and injured 50 others, most of whom were women and children early Sunday, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. With the latest casualties, the death toll in Gaza has climbed to a total of 197, including at least 58 children and 34 women, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Since the beginning of the airstrikes on Gaza this week, at least 1,225 have been injured, wi...

Gaza Has Just 10 Days Of Emergency Fuel Left – UN

The United Nations has warned that Gaza’s emergency fuel supplies will run dry in 10 days unless it receives immediate donor support. In a statement published on Wednesday, officials said $6.5m was needed to buy generator fuel and stave off the collapse of “critical services”. At least 7.7 million litres of fuel is needed to continue to operate hospital equipment, such as MRIs, CT Scanners, and x-ray machines. Fuel is also required to make sure operating theatres, schools and desalination plants continue to operate properly. “Immediate donor support is urgent to ensure that vulnerable Palestinians in Gaza can access life-saving health, water and sanitation services,” said UN official Roberto Valent, who heads the body’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People. “Hos...

Jerusalem: Palestinians Go On Anti-Trump Protests

Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets of Gaza and West Bank for the fourth Friday in a row in protests against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Palestinian health officials said at least 20 protesters were wounded by live fire, mostly along the Gaza border. An Israeli military spokeswoman said soldiers had shot at “main instigators” who posed a direct threat to the troops and who were trying to damage the border security fence. The spokesperson said about 4,000 Palestinians across the West Bank and Gaza, some throwing rocks and fire bombs and setting tires alight, confronted Israeli soldiers who responded mainly by firing tear gas. In Gaza, demonstrators chanted “Death to America, death to Israel, and death to Trump;” while mil...

Hamas Chief Calls For Continued Jerusalem Protests

The head of Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas called Thursday for fresh protests across the world against US President Donald Trump’s controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. “We demand the Islamic world make every Friday a day of anger and revolution in every capital and city until we bring down Trump’s decision,” Ismail Haniya said. “We ask churches, the Pope and our Christian brothers to devote their Sunday prayers to Jerusalem,” he added. Speaking in front of tens of thousands of supporters in Hamas-run Gaza at an event to commemorate the Islamist movement’s 30th anniversary, Haniya railed against Trump’s December 6 announcement that he would move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem and recognise the city as Israel’s capital. “We will bring down Trump’s ...

New Protests Flare Over Trump’s Jerusalem Declaration

New protests flared in the Middle East and elsewhere Sunday over US President Donald Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, a move that has drawn global condemnation and sparked days of unrest in the Palestinian territories. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has repeatedly warned of the consequences of Trump’s move, also lashed out by calling Israel a “terrorist state” that “kills children”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking at a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, hit back, calling Erdogan a leader who “bombs Kurdish villagers” and “helps terrorists”. Trump’s announcement on Wednesday sparked days of protests and clashes in the Palestinian territories. Four Palestinians were killed either in clashes or by Israeli a...

Israel, Turkey Leaders Trade Insults Over US Jerusalem Decision

Relations between Israel and Turkey took a bitter turn Sunday as their leaders traded accusations of involvement in terrorism, days after the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would fight against the controversial declaration, describing Israel as a “terrorist state” that kills children, in a speech in Istanbul. Hours later Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit back, calling his counterpart a leader who bombs Kurdish villagers and supports terrorists, during an official visit to Paris. The two countries had normalised relations in recent years, but Sunday’s flare-up came after Turkey was angered by US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Trump’s move has sparked protests...

Egypt To Temporarily Reopen Gaza Border Crossing

Egyptian officials say authorities will temporarily reopen the country’s border crossing with the Gaza Strip for the first time since the Islamic militant group Hamas ceded control of its side of the crossings to the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority. The officials say the Rafah crossing will be open for three days, starting on Saturday, for humanitarian reasons. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters. Last month, Hamas handed over control of Gaza’s crossings with Israel and Egypt to the Palestinian Authority as a step toward implementing a reconciliation deal with the rival Fatah movement. Rafah is Gaza’s main gateway to the outside world. Egypt has kept Rafah largely sealed off since 2013, after the ouster of Egyp...

Israel Warns Gaza Militants Against Revenge Attack

An Israeli general has warned Palestinian militants against carrying out attacks in revenge for the blowing up of a tunnel stretching from the Gaza Strip into the Jewish state last month. Major General Yoav Mordechai, head of a defence ministry unit responsible for activities in the Palestinian territories, made the comments in an Arabic-language video distributed late Saturday. Referring to the Israeli operation on October 30, he said that Israel “destroyed a terror tunnel in Israeli sovereign territory,” which resulted in the death of 12 Palestinian militants from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. “We are aware of the plot that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group is planning against Israel,” said Mordechai, whose defence ministry unit is known as COGAT. “They are playing with f...

Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh Says Deal Reached With Rival Fatah On Gaza

The leader of Hamas said on Thursday that his group has reached an agreement with the rival Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after Egyptian-brokered talks about the terms of control of the Gaza Strip. Ismail Haniyeh said in a statement that details would be announced later in the day in Cairo. The development follows two days of Hamas-Fatah talks in Cairo under what Haniyeh called “generous Egyptian auspices.” The talks marked the latest in a series of attempts to end a decade-long Palestinian territorial, political and ideological split that has crippled Palestinian statehood aspirations. In 2007, a year after winning Palestinian parliament elections, the Islamic militant Hamas evicted Abbas’ Western-backed Palestinian Authority from Gaza. Abbas was left with au...

Netanyahu Asks ICRC To Help Return Soldiers Remains From Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Wednesday for the International Committee of the Red Cross to help return civilians and the bodies of soldiers held in Gaza as he met the organisation’s head. “We are concerned about this unbelievable cruelty,” Netanyahu said after talks with ICRC president Peter Maurer, who is on a three-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories. Two Israeli soldiers, Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, are believed to have been killed in the 2014 war in the Gaza Strip and their remains held by the Islamic movement Hamas which runs the Palestinian territory. Three Israeli civilians, all said to be mentally unstable, are also believed to have entered Gaza and to be held by Hamas. The ICRC can help in “retrieving the bodies of our fallen soldie...

Israeli Army Reveals Details Of Gaza Border Wall

Israel has revealed the construction of a sensor-equipped underground wall alongside the 60km border with the Gaza Strip, which it described as a counter-measure to Hamas tunnels leading outside of its coastal territory. Israeli media published new disclosures by the military on Thursday about the project, costing $1.1bn and to be completed within two years under an accelerated schedule. The underground wall, which will be built from concrete and be fitted with sensors, is expected to reach dozens of metres deep into the ground and to stand at six metres high from ground level. Israel has described it as a territorial counterpart to its Iron Dome short-range rocket interceptor, capable of blunting Hamas's limited means of challenging its superior armed forces. The Israeli Haare...

Four Palestinians Wounded In Israel Airstrikes On Gaza

At least four Palestinians have been wounded, one of them seriously, after Israel carried out airstrikes on Hamas locations in Gaza. The strikes on Tuesday targeted three locations in Gaza, officials told Al Jazeera. The Israeli military said it carried out the airstrikes in response to a rocket fired toward Israel. Hamas spokesmen Hazem Qasem, however, rejected Israel’s claims. “The airstrikes targeted Hamas positions in the centre of the Gaza Strip,” Qasem told Al Jazeera. “The occupation claims that a group from Gaza launched rockets at them, but there is no side in Gaza that has claimed responsibility. “We are maintaining the period of calm and did not launch any rockets. It is not beneficial for the occupation to violate this period of calm.” The emergency directo...

Bin Laden’s Son, Hamza To Take-Over Al-Qaeda

Hamza Bin Laden, the son of late Osama Bin Laden, is expected to take-over Al-Qaeda, a terrorist organisation. Described as the “Crown Prince of Terror” Hamza is the only son of Bin Laden’s “favourite” wife. Hamza Laden was also regarded as the “poster boy” of al-Qaeda’s re-emergence on the terrorism front. He was introduced as “a lion from the den of Al-Qaeda” by the group’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. He is the son of Bin Laden’s third of six wives, Khairiah Sabar, and the eighth born of around 20 Bin Laden siblings. His mother came from a wealthy family and was known as a “strong-willed” woman. He was raised as Bin Laden’s designated heir and grew up hating several things about the USA. He is wanted by the US for his alleged role in American embassy bombings in Tanzania,...

Trump Envoy Heads To Israel For Holy Site Crisis Talks

A top aide to US President Donald Trump was due in Israel Monday in a bid to ease tensions over new security measures at a highly sensitive Jerusalem holy site after a weekend of deadly violence. Jason Greenblatt’s visit comes after more than a week of tensions over the Haram al-Sharif mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel installed metal detectors at entrances to the site, which includes Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock, following an attack on July 14 that killed two policemen. Palestinians view the move as Israel asserting further control over the site. They have refused to enter the compound in protest and have prayed in the streets outside. Israeli authorities say the metal detectors are needed beca...

Kogi Govt Calls For Senator Dino Melaye’s Arrest

A socio-political group, Kogi Development Agenda, KDA, has called on security operatives in the country to “immediately arrest the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye and charge him for an unlawful assembly which led to the lives of some Nigerians”. Addressing journalists in Lokoja over the weekend, the association’s Publicity Secretary, Isah Mohammed, said the “Dino example” is capable of plunging the state into “unimaginable depth of violence if certain steps are not taken to prove no one is bigger than the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”. In his words, “It is an appalling scenario for Dino Melaye, a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to gather people together, insult constituted authorities and make unfounded allegations against the Governor; cause...

UNHCR Urges Israel To Withdraw From Palestinian Land

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Zeid Al-Hussein, has urged Israel to pull out of territories captured in a 1967 war that Palestinians now seek for a state. He said it would benefit both sides after 50 years of enmity. In six days of war in June 1967, Israel seized the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip from Egypt and the Golan Heights from Syria. Palestinians want a state in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as their capital. The last round of peace talks collapsed in 2014. In a speech opening a three-week session of the Al-Hussein observed the 50th anniversary of when he “first heard the sound of war” as a boy in Amman, Jordan. He said Palestinians were now marking “a half-century of deep suffering under an occupation imposed by ...

Donald Trump Delays Moving US Embassy To Jerusalem

US President Donald Trump has signed a waiver to delay relocating the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, the White House says. The decision avoids a controversial step that would have complicated his efforts to restart long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian talks. "[Trump] has repeatedly stated his intention to move the embassy," the White House said in a statement on Thursday. "The question is not if that move happens, but only when." The White House said Trump "made this decision to maximise the chances of successfully negotiating a deal between Israel and the Palestinians". Trump, who pledged during the 2016 presidential campaign to move the embassy, chose instead to continue his predecessors' policy of signing a six-month waiver overriding a 1995 law requiring th...

Israeli Soldiers Kill Palestinian Teen

A 19-year-old Palestinian man was killed and five others wounded early on Sunday when Israeli forces stormed into Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, according to official sources. An army spokeswoman in Tel Aviv said that troops had entered the camp for unspecified "activities" and that some residents had turned violent and thrown pipe bombs at them, causing soldiers to react. "Responding to the threat, forces fired towards main instigators," she said. Two weeks ago, a 17-year-old Palestinian was killed after confrontations with Israeli soldiers in a West Bank village near Bethlehem.

Palestinians Warn Trump On Embassy

The Islamist Hamas movement has warned US President Donald Trump of the dangers of following through on his promise to move the US embassy to "occupied" Jerusalem. "The American administration is exceeding all red lines by moving its embassy," the group in charge of Gaza since 2007 said in a statement. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has also repeatedly warned that such a move would be viewed as an "aggression," has asked Jordan for help in opening a direct line of communication with the Trump White House, Israel Radio reported on Monday. White House speaker Sean Spicer said on Sunday that the US administration was "at the very beginning stages of even discussing" relocating the embassy, according to the Haaretz newspaper. Spicer's comment came shortly before a "...

Israel Strikes At Hamas Post After Attack

The Israeli military says it has struck a Hamas post in the southern Gaza Strip in response to an attack on an Israeli military vehicle. No one was wounded in Sunday's exchange. It marked a rare flare-up along the tense border that has remained largely quiet since a bloody 50-day war between Israel and Gaza militants in the northern summer of 2014. Israel typically responds to any fire toward it, holding Gaza's Hamas rulers responsible for all attacks emanating from the territory. Since the 2014 war a cease-fire has largely held. But militants in Gaza occasionally launch rockets toward Israel. Neither side appears interested in an escalation, though casualties could spark more violence.

Honey Traps Hack Israeli Soldiers’ Phones

Using photos of young women and Hebrew slang, the Palestinian militant group Hamas chatted up dozens of Israeli soldiers online, gaining control of their phone cameras and microphones, the military says. An officer, who briefed reporters on the alleged scam, said the Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip uncovered no major military secrets in the intelligence-gathering operation. Mainly using Facebook, Hamas used fake online identities and photos of young women, apparently found on the internet, to lure soldiers in, the officer said. "Just a second, I'll send you a photo, my dear," one "woman" wrote. "OK. Ha-ha," the soldier replied, before a photo of a blonde woman in a swimsuit popped up. The "woman" then suggested they both download "a simple app that lets us have...
