UK set to regulate Google and Facebook

The U.K. government said Friday, Nov 27, that it plans to create a Digital Markets Unit (DMU) to enforce "a new code to govern the behavior of platforms that currently dominate the market, such as Google and Facebook."   The aim is to protect smaller competitors and give consumers more control over personal data.   Under the new code, some of the world’s biggest tech companies may have to be more transparent about the services they provide and how they use consumers’ data. They may also be forced to give consumers a choice over whether to receive personalized advertising, and they won’t be able to place restrictions on customers that make it difficult for them to use rival platforms.   The DMU, which will be part of the Competition and Markets Authority...

Germany Backs Google And Apple On Virus App

The German government on Sunday switched to backing a coronavirus-tracing app using technology supported by Google and Apple, ditching a German-led alternative that had come under fire over privacy concerns. German Health Minister Jens Spahn and Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief of staff Helge Braun said Berlin was now in favour of a “decentralised software architecture” that would see user data stored on people’s own phones instead of on a central database. “Our goal is for the tracing app to be ready for use very soon and with strong acceptance from the public and civil society,” Spahn and Braun said in a joint statement. The rollout of an app that would use bluetooth to alert smartphone users when they have been in contact with someone infected with the virus is considered c...

Australia To Force Google, Facebook To Pay Domestic Media To Use Content

Australia will force Facebook Inc (FB.O) and Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google to share advertising revenue with local media firms, the country’s treasurer said on Monday, becoming one of the first countries to require digital platforms to pay for content they use. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the move comes after talks with Facebook and Alphabet failed to yield a voluntary code to address complaints by domestic media players that the tech giants have too tight a grip on advertising, their main source of income. “We understand the challenge that we face, this is a big mountain to climb,” Frydenberg told reporters in Canberra. “These are big companies that we are dealing with but there is also so much at stake, so we’re prepared for this fight.” The government has now asked the...

Opay Risks Ban As Report Finds Them Guilty Of Offering “Crazy Loans”

A new report by Hidenburg Research has put Opera’s loan apps under scrutiny for allegedly offering predatory loans to its customers in Nigeria, Kenya, and India. The report indicated that Opera is offering predatory loans that come with deceptive descriptions. The research report also points out the outrageously high annual percentage rate (APR) rates (up to 438% in the case of OPesa) as opposed to the maximum annual percentage rate (APR) of about 33% or less the apps claim to offer. If this report is anything to go by, Opay could be violating Google Play Store policies as Google has fought predatory loans for a while, but now it’s taking that fight to its app store. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google recently banned Play Store apps with “deceptive or harmful” personal l...

Huawei To Use TomTom Maps As An Alternative To Google Maps

Huawei will now use TomTom Maps as an alternative to Google Maps on its smartphones. This comes in the wake of the ban placed on the company by the United States. The ban makes the Chinese giant unable to do business with American companies, including Google. Already, we are expecting the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro to launch in March without Google Mobile Services. So, apparently, the devices will use TomTom Maps instead of Google Maps. The ban did not stop Huawei from selling an exorbitant number of smartphones in 2019. In fact, the company sold over 240 million units last year. That is 34 million units more than 2018’s 206 million units. A recent report has it that Huawei has sold up to 12 million units of the Mate 30 worldwide, even though the device lacks Google Mobile Services a...

Ben Enwonwu’s Painting Sold For £1.1m After Google Search

A painting by the Nigerian artist responsible for the ‘African Mona Lisa’ sold at auction in London on Tuesday for £1.1m after the family who owned it googled the signature and realised its importance. ‘Christine,’ by 20th century master of African modernism Ben Enwonwu, had been in the sitter’s family home ever since it was painted in Lagos in 1971. “The family were unaware of the significance of the painting or the importance of the artist, until a chance googling of the signature led them to Sotheby’s free Online Estimate Platform,” said the London auction house. The painting fetched over seven times the pre-auction estimate, finally going under the hammer for £1.1m (1.3 million euros, $1.4m). Well, it gets even worse. You see, you can listen to the recordings Google has stored and associated with your name simply by visiting this webpage the company set up. The feature works as a way of letting people search with their voice, and storing those recordings presumably lets Google improve its language recognition tools as well as the results that it gives to people.
