Enugu Assembly passes anti-open grazing bill

The Enugu State House of Assembly, on Thursday, passed the open grazing prohibition bill into law. DAILY POST reports that the bill scaled through the third reading after a clause by clause consideration. The passage came in line with the September 1 deadline issued by the Southern Governors for an end to open rearing of cattle. The State Assembly earlier in the week held a public hearing on the bill, during which the umbrella body of Fulani herdsmen, the Miyetti Allah had asked for one month extension to enable them make input on the bill. The bill seeking life pension for former governors of Enugu state is undergoing a major reconsideration by the state house of assembly. This is coming after protesters stormed the assembly complex at about 11 am on Tuesday March 16, demanding that the bill should be withdrawn. The executive bill titled ‘Enugu State Gubernatorial Pensions Bill 2021’, grants at least 900 percent of a governor’s annual salary as monetary entitlements for the former occupants of the office every year after leaving office.
