What to expect from Watford vs Liverpool, Leicester City vs Man Utd, Brentford vs Chelsea

The international week went by pretty quickly. And the football we really want to watch is back! The English Premier League enters its eighth week, with Watford welcoming Liverpool. This fixture has recent history behind it. The Hornets famously stopped Jurgen Klopp’s men from going unbeaten, before they eventually won the title in 2020. Although, Liverpool went on to lose again before the season ended, Watford sort of laid down a marker and ripped their invincibility apart. The Reds will have that in mind when they take the trip to London. The two Manchester clubs will be in action shortly afterwards. United go to Leicester City, while City welcome Burnley. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without his first-choice central defenders, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire. But Marcu...

Nigeria’s position still dicey despite avenging defeat to Central African Republic

You almost thought that it was two different sets of teams. On Thursday, the Central African Republic pulled off possibly one of the biggest upsets in the history of African football. The Wild Beasts defeated the Super Eagles 1-0 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. A few people might describe it as a smash-and-grab. It was anything but. They came with a game plan and caught Gernot Rohr’s men out cold in the last moments of the match. Nigeria flew out for the reverse fixture desperate for revenge. And they got it. This time around, Rohr came up with a plan, which involved playing three at the back. And it worked, as the Eagles pinned CAR back in Douala. The three-time African champions not only dominated the game, they had a two-goal lead to show for it at half ti...

Ballon d’Or: Silvestre Reveals Cristiano Ronaldo Prediction

Former Manchester United defender, Mikel Silvestre has claimed he told Cristiano Ronaldo he would win the Ballon d’Or in future when they played together at Old Trafford. Ronaldo joined United as an 18-year-old from Sporting CP for just £12million in 2003. The Portugal captain went on to establish himself as one of the greatest players in the Red Devils’ recent history. Silvestre was among those to notice his immense potential right from the very start. “Ronaldo was just making the step from teenager to man. He was still built like a teenager and also played more like a teenager. “He sometimes overdid it and made the wrong decisions. Cristiano created many chances and took them all on, but it took some time and a lot of shouting from the coach and his teammat...

FIFA and the player’s union FIFPro are cooperating to evacuate male and female footballers who wish to leave Afghanistan, the global body’s secretary general Fatma Samoura told AFP on Sunday. Last week, hardline Islamist militants the Taliban took control in Kabul with tens of thousands of people trying to leave in what has been dubbed one of the most difficult airlifts in history. “We’re in the process of working with FIFPro,” Samoura said. She added the body had “already done it in the past, we should be able to do it again.” On Friday, FIFPro said on Twitter it had “been liaising with governments to establish an evacuation plan for athletes at risk”. “Central to this rescue effort, is the ambition to bring as many people to safety as possible,” it added. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane close to breaking Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba’s record

Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane, is closing in on the Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba’s record of most Premier League goals scored by an African player in the history of the English top-flight league, after scoring a goal in his side’s 2-0 win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon. Mane’s goal against Burnley at Anfield means the Senegalese international has now scored 96 Premier League goals during his stints at Southampton and Liverpool, the 4th most of any African footballer to ever play in the Premier League. Drogba currently holds the record with 104 goals. But with Mane looking set to spend at least the remainder of this season at Liverpool, the 29-year-old does appear to have a good chance to break Drogba’s record. Mane’s teammate Mohamed Salah is also in the ru...

The Reds, Goal understands, are hoping to tie their star man down to a two-year extension, which would keep him at Anfield until 2025 and make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, earning around £250,000 a week. Salah’s current deal, signed in 2018, has less than two years left to run, but Liverpool sources are confident an agreement will be reached, and that the 29-year-old will become the latest player to commit his long-term future, following in the footsteps of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk.

‘Let’s kick him and see what he’s made of!’ – How Grealish was moulded into a £100m star by Hutton and Co at Aston Villa

A former team-mate of the England international playmaker has lifted the lid on how first steps to superstardom were taken Jack Grealish is, for the time being at least, the most expensive player in British football history, with a £100 million ($137m) move taking him away from Aston Villa to Premier League champions Manchester City. Few could have predicted such a meteoric rise during a three-season stint in the Championship between 2016 and 2019, with questions still being asked back then of the enigmatic playmaker's attitude and ability. Fast forward to the present and Grealish has become a fans' favourite in the senior England set-up and a man Pep Guardiola was prepared to shell out a nine-figure transfer fee for - but how did such a transformation come about, and when were the ...

‘Weak and pathetic’ – Carragher slams Arsenal after 2-0 defeat to Brentford

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher has labelled Arsenal ‘weak and pathetic’ after Mikel Arteta’s side slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Premier League new boys Brentford on Friday. Sergi Canos scored the first ever Premier League goal in Brentford’s history. It was also the first Premier League goal of the 2021/2022 season. Brentford fielded a starting XI of players who had never played in the English topflight before and were rewarded for their intensity and bravery. Sergi Canos sent a rasping drive past Arsenal goalkeeper, Bernd Leno at the near post. Smith-Rowe and Tierney were perhaps the only positives to take from Arsenal’s display. Christian Norgaard rose powerfully to blast the ball into the back of the net for Brentford second goal after Arsenal new signing,...

Strike: I see danger ahead, Doctors are Competing with God – Ngige

Minister of labour and productivity, Chris Ngige has accused doctors who are currently on strike of competing with God. Recall that resident doctors commenced a nationwide strike on August 2, over irregular payment of salaries, hazard allowances among other issues. Speaking at the 2nd Summit of Medical Elders Forum (MEF) in Abuja, the Minister said the medical profession is in danger now more than at any other time in its history. Ngige who asked these doctors to carry themselves with humility, also wondered why doctors tend to go on strike more often when someone from the medical profession holds a political position. He said;   “At no time in the history of NMA (Nigerian Medical Association) and the medical association, was I seeing our association and our profes...

Apologise To Nigerians For Annulling June 12 Elections – Southern Group Knocks IBB

Southern Nigeria Frontier, a socio-political group, has asked former Head of State, Gen Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) to apologise to Nigerians over the annulment of the June 12, 193 presidential elections rather than trying to distort history. The SNF noted that Babangida’s “iniquities are well preserved” and the former Head of State should not think Nigerians have a short memory. The southern group stated these in a release signed by its spokesman, Olufemi Lawson, and obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday. Earlier today, Babangida during an interview with AriseTV had claimed that he annulled the 1993 election in order to avert a coup and to prevent violence in the country – an election which was won by renowned philanthropist and politician, Chief MKO Abiola. The NSF said, “Our r...
