Human Rights lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has faulted the Federal Government's suspension of Twitter operations in the country. The senior lawyer who was a guest on the Wednesday edition of Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, said government is not permitted to resort to self-help in a constitutional democracy. Falana stated that what this implied is that government is supposed to have “sued Twitter if the organization refuses to respond positively to the concerns of the government”. He added that the lawsuit should have been filed in the United States of America or in Ghana where the microblogging service provider has its African headquarters.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, says the regime of the President. Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) may be giving false impression that the Joe Biden administration will send United States troops to defend Nigerians. The lawyer argued that such an operation was a violation of constitutional rights to liberty. In a short ruling on Tuesday, Justice Aikawa ordered the army to maintain status quo pending the hearing and determination of Falana’s suit. “In view of the agreement between counsel, I hereby order the 1st and 2nd de...

End Border Closure In National Interest, Falana Advises Buhari

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana, has advised the Federal Government to end the closure of the land borders into the country. He said it would be in the national interest for the government to call off the border closure. Rather than continue to close the land borders, Falana advised the Federal Government to “urgently dialogue with Nigeria’s neighbouring countries to jointly fight the menace of smuggling, which necessitated the border closure by Nigeria.” The lawyer gave the advice in a statement on Thursday while delivering a paper on “Rule of Law, Good Governance and Economic Development” at the annual conference of the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Accra, Ghana. He urged the Federal Government to reject the endorsement of its border closur...

Obasanjo Didn’t Succeed With 3rd Term, Buhari Will Also Fail – Ozekhome

Afenifere, pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, on Wednesday described the statement by President Muhammadu Buhari promising to take 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years as a slip of tongue. The organisation, while reacting to the suspicion among Nigerians that the President may be planning to elongate his tenure in office and the denial by the presidency, said it was a contradiction for Buhari to be talking about a 10-year programme when he has a four-year mandate. The president, in his opening speech during the inaugural June 12 Democracy Day celebration in Abuja, had said: “In face of these challenges, our government, elected by the people in 2015 and re-elected in March, has been mapping out policies, measures, and laws to maintain our unity and at th...

As the waiting game continues at the headquarters of the Department of State Services in Abuja over the release of Omoyele Sowore, his lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has vowed to remain at the facility pending the release of his client. The human rights lawyer insisted that he and his team would stay put until the DSS releases Sowore to him as ordered by the court and having perfected the bail condition. He said that as long as his client was being held, he would not leave the premises of the DSS. Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Tuesday ordered the DSS to release Sowore on bail. However, many Nigerians had expressed doubt on the DSS and President Muhammadu Buhari's administration to obey the court order especially following the regime's penchant fo...

Propose Money Bill Before Implementing Increase In VAT – Falana To FG

Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to propose a Money Bill to the National Assembly before the implementation of the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT). Falana told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Abuja, said that the National Assembly (NASS) erred by inviting the Minister of Finance and the Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to clarify issues of VAT increment. According to him, provisions of the constitution states that the President ought to have presented a money bill to be passed by the NASS before the increment. “It’s illegal, under a democratic dispensation you cannot impose tax or increase tax without a law made by the National Assembly or the State Assembly as the case may be. “In this case, it has to be...

“we Defeated IBB And Abacha, We Won’t Allow Another Dictator” — Femi Falana

Femi Falana (SAN), renowned human rights lawyer, has stated that many political leaders in Nigeria have called for revolution at one point or the other, and the call for revolution in the country is not new. Falana stated this on Monday, August 19 while speaking at a symposium organised by Coalition for Revolution (CORE) in Lagos. Igbere TV gathers that the senior advocate said during the colonial rule, Nigerians had called for revolution. However, he said unlike what is obtainable now, those who had called for revolution in those days were not charged with treason. Political leaders in this country have been calling for revolution and nobody charged them. “When Nigeria was at this stage in the...
