Fresh Crisis Brews In Igangan As Herdsmen Resume Farm Destruction

Fresh crisis appears to be brewing in the Ibarapaland area of Oyo State, following the return of Fulani herdsmen to the area and the alleged destruction of farms in the area. Fulani herdsmen had, in January, migrated out of Igangan and other communities in Ibarapa, Oyo State, following the eviction notice given to Seriki Fulani of Igangan, Salihu Abdukadir, by Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Igboho. Farmers in Igangan, however, told Saturday PUNCH on Friday that the herdsmen had not only started returning to the area but that they had allegedly resumed destruction of farms and threatened to attack farmers who resisted them. The Chairman of Real Farmers Association of Nigeria, Igangan branch, Mr. Abiodun Adegoke, in an interview with our correspondent, said some of the cas...

Herdsmen Clashes: Akeredolu, Afenifere Criticizes Sharia Council Over Ranching

THE Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, yesterday, called on the South-West governors to provide ranches for herdsmen before banning open grazing, to avoid further crisis, warning that outright banning of open grazing, without an alternative for herdsmen, was an invitation to greater disaster. But the remarks by the Sharia Council, however, generated angry reactions from the Chairman of the South West Governors’ Forum, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, and the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, who described the request as too pedestrian and insulting. This came on a day the Sarkin Fulani of Igangan in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State, Alhaji Salihu Abdul Kadir, lashed out on Oyo State police command for failing to arrest Mr. Sunday Adeyemo, also known as S...

Abdulkadri and his men had moved out of Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State to Kwara State after the expiration of a seven-day eviction notice by Yoruba rights activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho. Igboho had asked all Fulani residents in the area to leave to stop kidnapping allegedly perpetrated in the area by herders linked to the ethnic group. He accused Abdukadir of harbouring the herders allegedly kidnapping and killing residents of the community. KSM, in a statement by its coordinator, Saheed Olayinka Odofin, and secretary, Adeyink...

Residents of Ayete told our correspondent that a Fulani herdsman, Iskilu Wakil, was asked to leave the villages because he did not buy the land he was occupying. This was said to have infuriated the herder, who claimed he was a combatant with arms and ammunition. The Asawo of Ayete, Oba Emmanuel Okeniyi, said those who have farms in the villages had fled the places over fear they might be attacked by Wakil. Oba Okeniyi said, “They asked him to leave the area. Residents of Igangan in Ibarapa North-West LCDA of Oyo State have vowed never to allow the now-ejected Seriki Fulani, Abdulkadri Saliu, to return to the community. According to them, accepting the Seriki Fulani back in the town was tantamount to self-suicide, adding that they would rather die than to accept Saliu back in the town. “The entire town would rather go into self-suicide than to accept Seriki back. We would rather lay down our lives than for us and our generations to come to be subjected to the evil reign of Seriki again,” the Convener, Igangan Development Advocates, Oladiran Oladokun, told The PUNCH on Friday. Why It Will Be Difficult To Arrest Sunday Igboho – Falana

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has said it will be difficult and inequitable to arrest the popular Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho for asking Fulani herdsmen to vacate Igangan, Ibarapa area of Oyo State. Falana, while featuring on a Channels television programme on Friday morning said the failure of the Federal Government to take actions when some Northern Governors repatriated Almajiris back to their home states shows that the issue of security in Nigeria is being politicized. According to him, nobody has the right to issue quit notice to any Nigerian living in any part of the country. However, the human rights lawyer recalled that the government at the centre did not deem it necessary to arrest a Northerner who once asked Igbos living in the North to quit, saying, “i...

Igboho made the headlines after he issued a quit notice to Fulanis in Ibarapa local government area (LGA). However, things escalated as protesters stormed the Fulani settlement area in Igangan — shortly after Igboho addressed a crowd of his supporters — setting houses and vehicles ablaze. Speaking at a media conference in Ilorin, the Kwara capital, on Thursday, Abdulkadir alleged that seven of his people were killed as a result of the attacks, while two corpses have not yet been found. “I was at home when the area commander of Oyo state called me that they are coming to my hou...

Fulani Seized Our Farms, Killed, Raped, Kidnapped Us In Oyo – Oladiran Oladokun

The Convener of the Igangan Development Advocates, Mr Oladiran Oladokun, who is also a farmer, tells OLUFEMI OLANIYI the genesis of the crisis in Igangan and other parts of Ibarapaland, Oyo State and suggests the way out of it Can you trace the genesis of the herdsmen crisis in Igangan? The crisis has been going on for years and what happened last week, I think, was a reaction to the agelong issues of oppression of the host community by the Fulani herdsmen. The Fulani way of life and the culture of dominating and oppressing their hosts caused the problem. They have committed a lot of atrocities against our people, I mean the indigenes of Igangan and even the entire Ibarapaland. What are the atrocities? They started with frequent plundering of farms. It became so bad that at...

Herdsmen Attacks Will Stop If Government Is Serious About Ending It – Jimi Agbaje

Jimi Agbaje, a former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday said youths who gave ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to vacate Yorubaland must have acted out frustration after the government repeatedly failed to listen to their cries and save them from incessant attacks from bandits while the perpetrators were also not prosecuted. Violence had erupted in Igangan, Ibarapa, on Friday when a popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho, alongside his followers, stormed the Fulani settlement in the ancient town to eject Seriki Fulani, Salihu Abdukadir, and herdsmen accused of perpetrating crimes ranging from kidnappings, killings, rape to invasion of farmlands with their cattle. Igboho: Oro Worshippers Impose 7-day Curfew; Women, Visitors To Remain Indoors

Igangan Development Advocates (IDA), Mr Oladokun Oladiran, leader of the association, dismissed the claims that the festival was to ward off any reprisal attacks by the herders. He explained that the Oro festival which usually lasts seven days began about six days ago. During the festival, restriction of movement is enforced especially for women and non-indigenes of the town. He said, “Things are quiet in Igangan as Oro festival curfew is now ongoing.
