Police Recruitment: IGP Appeals To Supreme Court, Seeks Stay Of Judgment Execution

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, on Friday approached the Supreme Court urging it to upturn the Wednesday’s judgment of the Court of Appeal which nullified the recruitment of 10,000 constables carried out by him and the Nigeria Police Force in 2019. The appellants filed their notice of appeal of three grounds together with an application for stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s judgment. The three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Olabisi Ige had unanimously held that the IGP and the NPF lacked the power to recruit the constables. The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has suspended entry requirements for applicants who wished to join the Nigeria Police Force as constables. The IG in a signal dated August 24 directed that no candidate should be disqualified irrespective of their physical appearance, age and qualification. The House of Representatives yesterday summoned the Inspector-General of Police and the Commander-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps over the rising incidences of accidental discharge by security personnel. This followed the adoption of a motion by Deputy Whip, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (APC, Abia) and two other lawmakers. The lawmakers wanted to know measures being taken to forestall the incidences. The house also resolved that culprits face the weight of the law. It mandated the IGP to investigate and bring to justice, the culprit in the killing of a gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, Ndubusi Emenike and other killings attributed to wrongful use of firearms by security agents.

IGP Adamu Warns Against ‘Revolution Now’, Calls it “treasonable felony”

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has raised concerns about a planned ‘revolution’ march against the Nigerian government by the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria, calling it a ‘treasonable felony’ and warning that acts of terrorism would not be tolerated. Shiites Will Be Treated Like Terrorists – IGP Adamu Says

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has said that the police will treat members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) as terrorists. Adamu said this on Tuesday at the monthly conference with senior police officers in Abuja. A Federal High Court in Abuja had last Friday proscribed the group and directed the Federal Government to publish it in two national dailies. Adamu said Shiites “will be treated like terrorists and enemies of state” and prosecuted under the Terrorism Act, including anyone associating with them in any way that could advance their activities in the country. He added that “all forms of procession or protest by IMN is now illegal and thus banned”.

The Republic of Korea, through its grant aid and technical cooperation agency, Korea International Cooperation Agency, (KOICA), has organised a three-year training programme for 45 Nigerian police personnel. The training titled “Strengthening the Capacity of Nigeria Police Force in Forensic Training” is expected to start from 2019 to 2022, with annual participation of 15 officers undertaking a 3-week course in Seoul, Korea, a statement by KOICA said.
