Imo Turning To Another Borno, Nigerians Lament On Social Media

Nigerians on social media have lamented the persistent attacks by gunmen in Imo State, with many expressing fears that the South-East state was fast turning to another Borno State. Borno State, with Maiduguri as capital city, is located in Nigeria’s North-East. The state rose to inglorious fame when Mohammed Yusuf, founder of militant Islamist group Boko Haram, was killed in 2009. Yusuf’s death birthed a macabre era of unprecedented uprising; carnage, bombings, kidnappings, amongst other crimes against humanity, even till date. Millions of aboriginal Borno residents have also been displaced by the activities of the insurgents as military forces battle to clear the terrorists out of the entire North-East. Gov. Okorocha: Of Tyranny And Discontent By Chido Onumah

A very significant event—a peaceful mass protest against the misgovernance and mindless plunder of Imo State by Mr. Rochas Okorocha—took place in Owerri exactly a month ago, on Monday, December 18, 2017. It was organized by the Imo Peoples Action for Democracy (IPAD), a coalition of civil society and professional groups in Imo State. It didn’t get much media traction, not because it didn’t deserve national media attention. Part of the problem is the character of the Nigerian media. The other explanation was the concerted effort by Mr. Okorocha and his goons, aided by the Nigeria Police, to suppress the protest. By the morning of the protest, radio stations in Owerri were running bulletins issued by the Nigeria police, claiming that the protest had been called off because the police had de...

He told Sun that the party was repositioned to regain power, thereby will not be distracted by mere propaganda from nonentities who possibly could be from the ruling party, APC. “The election was the most transparent, freest convention since the inception of the PDP in 1998 and I must commend the electoral panel. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariffs spoke at his Omuma country home while addressing prominent political leaders from Imo State at a meeting on the chances of the Igbo in the 2019 general elections.
