Pulisic must be ‘nasty’ to succeed – Klinsmann

Former United States men's coach Jurgen Klinsmann has said Christian Pulisic needs to become "nasty" to succeed at Chelsea. Klinsmann, who oversaw Pulisic's development at national level, said he admired the 21-year-old's decision to move from Borussia Dortmund to England, but acknowledged the winger must do more to fit into the Premier League. "You never know it's the right fit unless you do it," Klinsmann said. "Christian did well to say: 'I'm going to throw myself in another cold water, go over to London and throw myself in the Premier League, and I have to fight through the system there.' So that's what he's in. "He's a very special player, he's tremendously talented, but this is a big step, because Borussia Dortmund was also basically the club where he got formed into a pr...

Three things we learned from Liverpool v Bayern Munich

Liverpool was forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday. Here are three things we learned from a hard-fought Anfield stalemate: Klopp frustrated by Bayern again Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was back in conflict with Bayern after spending seven years jousting with the German giants when he in charge at Borussia Dortmund. Klopp twice knocked them off their perch to win the Bundesliga, but Bayern handed the German one of the most painful defeats of his career when they beat Dortmund in the last seconds of the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley. It is a loss that still gnaws at Klopp, who this week confirmed he almost became Bayern manager in 2008 before joining Dortmund a year later. Bayern instead appo...

Guangzhou Evergrande Ditch Ancelotti Plans In Favour Of Cannavaro

Fabio Cannavaro is to return to Guangzhou Evergrande for a second spell as head coach after his soon-to-be-announced departure from Tianjin Quanjian, sources have confirmed to Goal. After several round of talks, plans to appoint recently ousted Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti as the successor to Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is expected to leave once his contract expires at the end of November, have been scrapped by the seven-time Chinese Super League champions. Cannavaro replaced Marcello Lippi at Evergrande at the end of 2014 but his short stint in charge only lasted six months after defensive deficiencies and injury problems derailed Evergrande’s season. Ironically, Scolari came to the rescue of the then struggling Evergrande following the sacking of Cannavaro and managed to steady the s...

United States Coach Bruce Arena Leaves After World Cup Failure

United States coach Bruce Arena has left his role after the side failed to reach the World Cup finals for the first time since 1986. The US will not compete in next year’s finals in Russia after a 2-1 defeat in Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday. Former US defender Alexi Lalas said the failure was a “sad and dark moment”. “We didn’t get the job done, and I accept responsibility,” said 66-year-old Arena, who took charge for the second time last November. Arena left Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy to succeed Jurgen Klinsmann, who was sacked with the US sitting bottom of the six-country qualifying group. Arena revived their fortunes sufficiently for the US to require only a point from their final qualifying match to book their place at an eighth successive World Cup. But oppo...

United States’ Pulisic ‘Thankful’ For Tuchel’s Influence

Borussia Dortmund and U.S. international midfielder Christian Pulisic expressed his gratitude to former manager Thomas Tuchel for the impact the coach had on his career. Tuchel and Dortmund parted ways back on May 30, completing a two-year run at the club. “I’m just very thankful for everything [Tuchel] did for me,” Pulisic said during a promotional event for Panini America on Monday. “It’s tough in professional sports when a coach has to go like this, especially after a pretty good season. But we’re excited to see who we get and I think the team will be just fine.” It was early in Tuchel’s tenure with BVB that he gave Pulisic his first experiences with Dortmund’s first team. Pulisic repaid that faith, becoming the youngest foreigner to score in the Bundesliga at 17 years, six mon...

Jurgen Klinsmann Fired as U.S. Soccer Coach

On Thursday, Jurgen Klinsmann, the coach of the United States national men’s soccer team, dined with President Obama, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, a number of Nobel laureates and a couple of astronauts at a gala in Berlin. The sausages were “excellent,” he said. On Friday, Klinsmann returned to his home in California and was bemused by the criticism he was receiving in the news media for two recent losses by his team, which had damaged — but not erased — its chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. On Sunday, Klinsmann aggressively defended his record as coach in an interview, saying that he was “very comfortable” in his position and was not especially concerned about being removed. On Monday, Klinsmann was fired. The announcement, which was made by U.S. Soccer, the f...
