WHO Predicts 100,000 Deaths from Covid-19 by end of Tokyo Olympics

The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted 100,000 covid-19 deaths by the end of the Tokyo Olympics this summer. The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, finally kicked off today, Wednesday, July 21. Some 11,000 athletes from 200 countries are set to arrive for the Olympics and the number of cases in Japan linked to the Games now stands at 79, according to organizers. Five of them are Olympic Village residents, three of which are athletes. Competitors including US gymnast Kara Eaker, basketball player Katie Lou Samuelson and tennis star Coco Gauff tested positive for Covid prior to arriving in Tokyo, ending their Olympic dreams. The funeral rites of former spokesperson of Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, kicked off today April 22, with a lying-in-state of his body and service of songs at the Police College, Ikeja Lagos. His body will leave Lagos for Moro, his country home, in Ife North LGA of Osun State On Friday, April 23 where a Christian wake keep will be held at the Origbo Anglican Grammar School, Moro, to be followed by a candlelight procession. His body will be interred on Saturday, April 24 Odumakin died from COVID19-related complications at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital isolation centre on Friday, April 2.

Nigeria National League Gets Sponsor, to air Live Matches

  The Nigeria National League (NNL) will announce its sponsor for the 2020/2021 season within one month. The CEO Sajo Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria that the development would boost the competition and level of play. The NNL chief also announced plans to broadcast live matches to a global audience. Mohammed stressed that football is a serious business that requires funding. “We have found an organisation that has indicated an interest in sponsoring the league. “The company is knowledgeable about football and its benefits in the long run. “I believe that in the next few weeks, they will be officially unveiled”, he said. The 2020/2021 NNL season kicked off on February 13. There are 46 participating clubs.

9th National Assembly Inauguration Kicks-Off

The inauguration of the ninth National Assembly has just kicked-off at 10 am by the clerk of the assembly Mohammed Sani-Omolori. Prior to the commencement of the inauguration, some governors of the All Progressives Congress led by the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi, stormed the NASS complex to witness the ceremony and the election that will follow. Others who are in the National Assembly includes the governors of Kwara, Plateau, Kebbi Osun, Kano, Katsina and Nasarawa states.
