Afenifere tells Buhari to ignore Gumi and declare bandits terrorists

The pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere has told President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore the statement made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi and declare bandits as terrorists. Gumi had recently warned President Buhari against declaring bandits as terrorists. He said doing so will come at a price. Gumi advised Buhari to, instead, grant amnesty to the bandits killing and kidnapping citizens in the north and other parts of the country. Sharing his experience while working on a story for a Nigerian media house, Kefas recalled how an editor asked him substitute the word 'terrorists' for 'bandits' in his report. When he inquired why he should so that, the journalist revealed that the editor told him that the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation reportedly warned them against doing so. Kefas stated that even though terrorists allegedly bombed a rail line with the aim of kidnapping people, the media still referred to them as bandits.

The United Kingdom has warned its citizens against travelling to twelve states in Nigeria over insecurity issues. This was disclosed in a travel advisory published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
