This was despite the fact that former army general Umaro Cissoko Embaló had already been sworn in as president at a hotel in the capital, Bissau. The ruling PAIGC party is contesting that result in the supreme court. Despite the resignation of one presiden...

Why Buhari Made A U-turn On Legislators’ Jumbo Pay – Presidency

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), now understands why national legislators get jumbo pay, compared to when he came into office in 2015, according to the Presidency. According to Saturday PUNCH’s investigations, each of the 109 senators in the National Assembly takes home about N182m yearly, translating to N15.1m monthly or N45.3m per quarter. In the House of Representatives, each of the 360 lawmakers gets a total annual package of N136.6m or N11.3m monthly (or N33.9m quarterly). The pay package is worked out in keeping with the ‘collapse’ system introduced since the 6th Assembly, where the total allowances/running cost due to a lawmaker as bulk payment per quarter, was broken down and paid monthly instead. The National Assembly and its organs, prior to ...

South-West Lawmakers Reject Miyetti Allah’s Request To Join Amotekun

The demand by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to participate in the operations of the South West regional security network, Amotekun, has been turned down by the Houses of Assembly of the respective states. PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the houses of assembly of the states had concluded work on the bill after the public hearings without making any input to give MACBAN a place. At the moment, Ekiti State has passed the bill, even though a meeting of speakers of the respective houses held in Ibadan on Thursday to harmonise the positions of the respective states. The necessity of the harmonisation arose from the different public hearings held across the states to get inputs from the different stakeholders and citizens of the state. During one of...

Osun State Government Splashes N260M On Cars For Lawmakers, Despite Owing Pensioners

Despite owing retired civil servants pensions and gratuities for several years, the Osun State Government has bought new Toyota Camry XLE 2019 cars for the 26 members of the state House of Assembly. The expenditure is at least N266 million, going by the unit price of $29,175 for each in the U.S. Considering the cost of importation, the expected profit by the supplier, and inflated prices associated with government expenditure in Nigeria, the state government is expected to have paid much more for the cars. A spokesperson to the Osun State governor refused to disclose the exact amount paid for the vehicles and the company that supplied them. Critics described the government's action as a "misplacement of priority" for a state said to be cash strapped, but Governor Gboyega Oyetol...

Abortion is Worse than Pedophilia – Catholic Priest Says in Defense of Denying Lawmakers Holy Communion

Rev. Richard Bucci of Sacred Heart Church in West Warwick, Rhode Island has defended his decision of not giving holy communion to lawmakers who supported an abortion rights bill. In an interview with NBC affiliate WJAR in Providence, the 72-year-old Catholic priest stated that abortion is worse than pedophilia. Bucci further described abortion as "the slaughter of innocent children." The Catholic priest also insisted that more children have been killed by abortion than those abused. Bucci said; "We are not talking about any other moral issue, where some may make it a comparison between pedophilia and abortion. Pedophilia doesn't kill anyone, and this does." In a separate weekend interview on the “Gene Valicenti Show,” Bucci stated that he is not creating a new rule b...

German Govt Calls for New Elections in Thuringia After Uproar

Germany’s coalition parties have called for voters in Thuringia to return to the polls after the shock election of a state premier with the help of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) triggered national outrage and protests. “We rule out forming a government or political majorities with votes from the AfD,” a statement from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) read, following a crisis meeting of coalition party leaders in Berlin. Thomas Kemmerlich of the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) beat out left-wing incumbent Bodo Ramelow to become state premier in Thuringia on Wednesday with the support of lawmakers from Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and the AfD. Working with the AfD – an anti-immigrant party accused of h...

50% Pay Cut: Lawmakers Tackle Pastor Adeboye

A couple of weeks ago, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye stirred the hornets’ nest. He called on all the 36 state governors and members of the State Houses of Assembly to cut their salaries and emoluments by 50 per cent in order to tackle the challenges the state governments were facing in education, health and other critical sectors. In their reactions, members of the executive and the legislature disagreed with Pastor Adeboye’s proposal arguing that the church should lead the way by sacrificing a percentage of their tithes and offerings. According to them, the churches amass wealth by collecting money from their members with pastors buying private jets while their members could not even afford to send their children to the schoo...

Florida Congressman Files Ethics Complaint Against Nancy Pelosi for Tearing Trump’s Speech

Florida congressman, Matt Gaetz has filed an ethics complaint against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for tearing up her own copy of President Trump's speech during the State of the Union address on Tuesday, saying she broke the law. Pelosi, after sitting down for over an hour listening to Trump's state of the union address, stood up after Trump ended his speech and in the front of cameras and the watching congress, tore her own copy of Trump's speech. Mr. Gaetz, one of Mr. Trump’s allies, termed Mrs. Pelosi’s gesture of tearing the speech as “beneath the dignity of the House, and a potential violation of law (18 USC 2071)” and urged her to resign.   Mr. Gaetz while posting on Twitter said he has sent the letter to the two top lawmakers on the House ethics committee...

Buhari is Right, We Are All Corrupt – Jonathan’s ex-aide

Doyin Okupe, an ex-aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has backed President Muhammadu Buhari’s views on corruption in Nigeria but frowned at his approach in tackling the menace. Okupe noted that corruption was the reason for the recent defection of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress, APC, following the Supreme Court judgment that sacked the PDP government in Imo State. Recall that the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chiji Collins, alongside seven other members from the PDP, had defected to the APC. He also noted that what happened in Imo will likely happen in majority of the states of the federation, adding that churches and Mosques are not left out in the issue of corruption. The politicia...
