I’m not a politician, so I have no word for the opposition – Buratai reacts to PDP kicking against his nomination as an Ambassador

Immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai (Rtd) has reacted to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) kicking against his nomination as a non-career ambassador. Recall that the PDP had described the nomination as a plot to shield the ex-Service Chiefs from investigation over the “killing of innocent Nigerians and crimes against humanity” under their leadership. Addressing journalists after a special gala night organised for him by members of the 29th Regular Course Association of the Nigerian Defense Academy in Abuja on Saturday February 6, Buratai said he would not respond to PDP’s statement because he is not a politician. He said;   “It’s an honourable retirement and also an honourable appointment. “I’m not a politician, so I have no word for the oppo...

US Finally Backs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for Next WTO Director

The Biden administration on Friday, Feb 5, said the U.S. would support Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the next director-general of the World Trade Organization, hours after South Korea’s trade minister stepped out of the race. The Biden administration’s decision is the last hurdle standing in the way of Ms. Okonjo-Iweala assuming the top job at the WTO, after South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee pulled out. Last year, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala was supported by a majority of WTO members, but the Trump administration backed Ms. Yoo, saying she was better qualified. The office of the U.S. Trade Representative said in a statement Friday: "Dr. Okonjo-Iweala brings a wealth of knowledge in economics and international diplomacy from her 25 years with the World Bank and two terms as Nigerian Finance Minister....

Myanmar military Takes Control after Detaining leader, Aung San Suu Kyi and other Key Government Figures

Myanmar's military has detained the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi along with other leaders of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party in an apparent coup. A presenter on military-owned Myawaddy TV announced the takeover on Monday February 1 and cited a section of the military-drafted constitution that allows the military to take control in times of national emergency. The presenter said the army carried out the detentions in response to “election fraud” in last November’s poll and its failure to postpone the election because of the coronavirus crisis, handing power to military chief Min Aung Hlaing and imposing a state of emergency for one year, according to a statement on a military-owned television station. The announcement and the declaration of a state of emergen...

New Service Chiefs Not Enough, Exercise Leadership, Northern Elders Tell Buhari

The Northern Elders Forum says the appointment of new service chiefs is not enough to bring the needed change Nigerians expect to see in the country’s war against insurgency and sundry security challenges, adding that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), must exercise leadership as the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces. “The key is the president, he has to change his attitude to the defence and security of this country. You cannot run this country with all these security challenges and maintain the distance that he maintains with what is going on. You listen to the president and his spokespeople are telling you the situation is better than it was in 2015. It is a very disturbing thing when you hear this. “There are no suicide bombings now but the populati...

Tinubu May Lose Control Of APC In New Leadership Struggle

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC had on June 25, 2020, dissolved its National Working Committee (NWC) where Tinubu and his associates had a clear majority. They lost the battle as the management of the party structure is now in the hands of a caretaker committee and state governors who are battling to reassert their control over the party’s machinery. Although the general view is that Tinubu will run for the presidency in 2023, but he has not announced any such intentions.
