Benzema to face trial for alleged involvement in attempted blackmail case

Real Madrid forward Benzema is accused of paying individuals to extort money from Mathieu Valbuena by threatening to make the video public in 2015. The 33-year-old French striker argues that a police officer used dishonest methods to draw him into the affair. He has not played for his country since it came to light. French prosecutors announced Benzema would face trial on Thursday, reported the AFP News Agency. AFP also quoted Benzema's lawyer, Sylvain Cormier, as saying he was not surprised the matter was going to trial, but that the decision was "as absurd as it was predictable". Benzema has scored 261 goals for Real since joining the Spanish side in 2009. He and Valbuena were international team-mates at the time of the affair and were in the France squad fo...

Benzema Associates charged Over Extortion Bid

Two associates of scandal-dogged Real Madrid star Karim Benzema were charged by French police on Thursday over suspected extortion, sources close to the case told AFP. Police charged a 29-year-old man with “attempted extortion” and 22-year-old woman with colluding in the bid, following the arrest on Tuesday of three people suspected of being involved in the affair. A second man was released without charge. The arrests and charges follow a complaint by a former friend of Benzema, named as Leo D., who alleges the accused tried to kidnap him in Paris over a financial dispute with Benzema. Investigators said the row centred on 50,000 euros ($56,663) in cash destined for Benzema via a sponsor. Leo D. was tasked with bringing the sum to France from Morocco but claims he was stopped by cus...

I defended the player a lot both before and during [the court case] because that seemed like the logical thing to do," he said."I did an analysis not on an individual but on the group as a whole. The group has always been above everything else."I chose to do this because of what is best for the French national team. I did what is good for the group and it is my decision."For Deschamps' latest squad for France's upcoming World...

Giroud Warns Arsenal Over Playing Time

France forward Olivier Giroud said on Tuesday he will not accept a bit-part role with Arsenal next season. The 30-year-old was often a substitute over the last campaign as Gunners manager Arsene Wenger preferred to line up Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott in attack. Giroud, who also had an injury-disrupted campaign, made only 11 league starts and, with 18 appearances from the bench, was the Arsenal player most used as a substitute last season. But while he said he’s happy at Arsenal, the former Montpellier striker says he wants to play more. “I still have two or even three years left on my Arsenal contract, for the moment my future is at Arsenal,” he said. “I feel good here, I want to win the Premier League with Arsenal. “But I don’t know what the future holds.” On Sund...
