Real Madrid vs Chelsea: Zidane, Varane Hint on Referees Favouring Tuchel’s Men

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane and defender Raphael Varane have played down fears they could face biased refereeing against Chelsea, because of their European Super League involvement. The two teams clash in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday evening at the Bernabeu. This comes a week after Los Blancos president, Florentino Perez, tried to lead 12 clubs to create a breakaway competition to rival the Champions League. Following a massive backlash, Chelsea withdrew their membership, but Real is yet to follow suit. That has led to suggestions in the Spanish media that UEFA’s referees might be biased against Madrid. “I don’t believe that. The referee will do his job, as always, and we just think about playing football, nothing else,” Zidane told a pre...

Ukraine May Seek Nuclear Weapons if NATO Rejects its Membership Application and Abandons them to Russia

A Ukrainian diplomat has warned that his country may be forced to acquire nuclear weapons to safeguard the country if NATO does not accede to its membership demand amid spiralling tensions with neighbouring Russia. Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, suggested to national public radio network Deutschlandfunk that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s administration is weighing all possible options as fears mount over an imminent invasion by Russia. The remark also comes as the US pulled back two of its war ships that were on route the black sea after getting warnings from Russia. “Either we are part of an alliance like NATO and also make our contribution to strengthen this Europe, or we have only one option; to rearm ourselves,” Germany’s DPA news agency q...

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle Set To Join APC

Fresh moves are on for Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). This is just as the party yesterday announced the extension of its on-going membership revalidation and registration exercise to accommodate new members. There have been talks about the planned defection of Matawalle, who became governor of the state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following the judgement of the Supreme Court on the crisis that trailed the primaries of APC in Zamfara. Matawalle’s moves to join the APC predated the defection of the Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi to the ruling party in November last year. For Ambode, No Respite Yet In Lagos APC

When immediate past governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode gleefully posed for the camera after revalidating his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) last month, many had thought the lingering crisis between him and the top hierarchy in the Lagos state chapter of the party which was a fall-out of the 2019 governorship primary and which cut short Ambode’s desire to secure reelection had been resolved behind the scene. Some even predicted that having failed to secure any appointment at the federal level, especially in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, Ambode’s time may come in 2023 as he may be considered for a senatorial seat or plum job in Abuja if the party secures victory again. Events last week, however showed that the battle between Ambode and his...
