According to reports and investigations by our reporters, the porous Nigerian borders, spanning over 17,000 kilometres, make it possible for this illicit petrol trade to flourish for so long despite deliberate actions by security operatives. Former Governor of Osun State and Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has revealed why the border was opened for returnees despite a Presidential directive. Recall it was reported few days ago that the number of Coronavirus confirmed cases in Osun State increased from 2 to 14, after 12 persons tested positive in two days. The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, on Monday revealed conditions to be met before the country’s borders could be closed. The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, resolved to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for shutting down all the Nigerian land borders. This followed a motion raised by Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central) at today's plenary, which got the support of over 2/3 majority. The ECOWAS Parliament on Monday appealed to the Nigerian government to reopen its closed borders as it hampers on the implementation of free trade movement within the ECOWAS region. Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. Moustapha Cisse Lo made the call in a statement at the opening of the 2nd Extra-Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Monrovia, Liberia.
