Hausa Motorcyclists And Yoruba Youths Fight In Iyana-Iba, Lagos

What began as a minor clash between Hausa motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in the Iyana-Iba area of Ojo, Lagos, quickly degenerated into a tribal clash, early Monday morning, as Hausa and Yoruba youths confronted themselves, wielding dangerous weapons. The fracas according to eye witnesses began when Hausa motorcyclists gathered themselves to protest constant harassment by the road union members, after an Hausa motorcyclist was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death. Akeredolu Orders Indefinite Suspension Of NURTW In Ondo

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has ordered indefinite suspension of activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state. He directed all NURTW members are to immediately vacate all motor parks across the state. The Governor had last week said the suspension of NURTW and RTEAN activities in motor parks would only last for two weeks. Akeredolu, who spoke Tuesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale, said the indefinite suspension would not affect RTEAN. Akeredolu said the decision to suspend NURTW activities indefinitely was based on the unruly and uncultured behaviour of the union leaders. NURTW chairman of Boundary/Aiyetoro Unit, Lagos State, Saheed Arogundade was yesterday sentenced to death by hanging. Saheed Arogundade got the sentence for the murder of a 32-year-old policeman, Gbenga Oladipupo. Justice Olabisi Akinlade discharged and acquitted Arogundade’s five co-defendants Mustapha Layeni, Adebayo Abdullahi, Seyi Pabiekun, Sikiru Rufai and Yusuf Arogundade of a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
