Cows Take Over Ondo Streets Despite Ban On Open Grazing By Governor Akeredolu

Commuters and residents in Akure, Ondo state have reported an increase in disruptive encounters with herdsmen and cattle grazing along its major roads despite Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s order banning open grazing in the state. Some residents told SaharaReporters that some cows on Monday blocked a road in Ayedun, a popular street in the state capital disrupting vehicular movement for many minutes. It was gathered that motorists were forced to stop their vehicles to pave the way for the cows moving freely on the road. We Are Tired Of Open Grazing — Miyetti Allah

Miyetti Allah Breeders Association of Nigeria says it is tired of open grazing in Ondo State, calling on government to make provision for ranches as a way of putting an end to frequent herdsmen/ farmers’ crises. The Chairman of the association in the state, Alhaji Bello Garba, stated this on Wednesday in Akure. Garba was speaking during a public hearing on a bill to regulate rearing and grazing of livestock and provide for the establishment of ranches and other related matters. Herdsmen Shun FCT Open Grazing Ban, Obstruct Traffic

Herdsmen have continued to move cattle on roads in the Federal Capital Territory in contravention of the ban on open grazing by the Federal Capital Territory Administration. Some of the pastoralists were seen grazing their animals at the Idu Industrial Estate , Jabi bypass and the Gwarimpa Expressway in defiance of the prohibition of open grazing of animals by the FCTA. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state has said that any cow seen wandering the streets of Akure, the state capital will be arrested. According to him, the government is banning open grazing.   He said this in a recent chat with TVC ''We are banning open grazing. If I see a cow I will arrest it. They can't move in Akure town. We wouldn't allow it. It is not going to happen. We must put an end to it'' he said   Following the incessant clashes between herders and farmers in the SouthWest, the governors of the South West state on January 25, banned open grazing.
