Man Utd vs Aston Villa: Solskjaer reveals why Fernandes took penalty instead of Ronaldo

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes took the penalty against Aston Villa, because “the decision was made before the game”. The Red Devils’ unbeaten start to this season ended on Saturday, thanks to a 1-0 defeat against the Midlands club at Old Trafford. Kortney Hause headed in a corner before giving away a late penalty, as referee Mike Dean penalized him for handball. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo still on the pitch, Fernandes took responsibility and blasted the ball into the stands. When asked if Fernandes was first choice to take the spot kick, Solskjaer told Sky Sports: “Yes. The decision was made before the game.” The result leaves United in fourth place with 13 points.

Cadiz vs Barcelona: Koeman blasts referees after 0-0 draw

Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman, has criticized the standard of refereeing in LaLiga, after he and Frenkie de Jong were both sent off during a 0-0 draw against Cadiz on Thursday. De Jong picked up two yellow cards in the second half, while Koeman was given his marching orders in stoppage time for something he said to the fourth official. The draw was Barca’s second in the league this week, following Monday’s stalemate against Granda at Camp Nou, and further increases the pressure on Koeman. Koeman will now serve a touchline ban for Sunday’s game against Levante, when another bad result could spell the end of his tenure at Barca. “I was sent off for telling the fourth official that there was a second ball on the pitch and the game should be stopped. “Everyone...

Ligue 1: Fans clash, invade pitch as Lens beat Lille in derby

Lens defeated reigning French champions Lille 1-0 on Saturday in a northern derby overshadowed by a pitch invasion that delayed the start of the second half by 30 minutes. Dozens of Lens supporters stormed the Stade Bollaert-Delelis pitch at half-time to confront the visiting Lille fans nestled away in a corner of the ground after tensions flared with other spectators. Riot police intervened to separate the factions of opposing supporters as both sets of fans hurled seats at each other over a partition wall. The trouble comes the week after Nice were docked a point following the ugly incidents that led to their August 22 home match with Marseille to be abandoned. That game will be replayed at a neutral venue on October 27. Nice were also ordered to play three matches behind c...

Cape Verde vs Nigeria: Rohr lists Challenges Super Eagles are Facing

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said his team will be battling with the heat and an artificial pitch, when they play Cape Verde in a 2022 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. Rohr also described their hosts as a very defensive team. Nigeria are in Mindelo to play their second fixture in the qualifying series, after defeating Liberia 2-0 last Friday. And Rohr has stated some of the issues they have to overcome, if they will make it two wins out of two. He said: “It’s a different pitch because we’re not used to playing on a synthetic pitch. Some of our players have played on this pitch when they were playing in Nigeria, but they are now in Europe. “We trained in Lagos on a synthetic pitch, but this one is softer and this is better to play on. “It...

How Trent Alexander-Arnold found his Right-back Position at Liverpool

'Get at Trent! Get at Trent!' Neil Critchley bellowed from the side of the pitch as Bobby Adekanye was fed the ball. Seventeen-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold was new to the role of right-back, a fish out of water. Until now, he'd mostly played in midfield, either wide-right or centrally; he'd even spent some time at centre-back. Right-back brought a whole new gamut of challenges - one-v-one defending, learning how and when to get forward to support the attack, and what exactly to do when faced with wingers faster, stronger and trickier than himself. His head would spin and frustration would build, often to the point he would angrily send balls flying across to the far reaches of the training pitches of Liverpool's academy. It’s too long,” Rohr told Elegbete TV. “We need better escorts, we need better organization and the roads are full. This is one problem. Arsenal have finally reached an agreement with French Ligue 1 club Marseille, over a loan deal with an obligation to buy their player, Matteo Guendouzi. TF1 reports that Guendouzi is now set to arrive in Marseille on Monday to complete his medical. The France Under-21 international first joined Arsenal back in 2018 from Lorient. He initially showed plenty of promise under former Gunners manager, Unai Emery. But Guendouzi fell out of favour under current Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, and was banished from the squad following an incident on the pitch in which he grabbed Brighton’s Neal Maupay by throat in June last year. Kenya government denies involvement in the arrest and extradition of Nnamdi Kanu

The Kenya government has denied claims of being involved in the arrest and extradition of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, saying “it does not want to be dragged into Nigeria’s internal affairs.” Kenya High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Wilfred Machage, said this at a media briefing in Abuja today, July 2. According to Machage, the allegation was “concocted” to pitch Nigerians in the south-east against the Kenyan people. “I want to address the allegation by denying that Kenya was involved in the alleged arrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria of Mr Kanu. The allegation is fictional, imaginary and deliberately concocted to fuel antagonistic feeling amongst the southern section of the Nigerian people against the Kenya people. Indeed many countries have been accused — Rwanda, Czec...

The 36-year-old saw a powerful first-half free-kick saved by Thibaut Courtois but otherwise failed to bother the Belgian goalkeeper. Ronaldo’s frustration was evident after the full-time whistle, as he threw his captain’s armband down before kicking it. He left it for someone else to pick it up off the ground, as the Juventus star trudged down the tunnel....

Euro 2020: You’re a Bad Captain – Fans slam Ronaldo after Hungary match

Some football fans have labelled Cristiano Ronaldo as being a bad captain and leader. They hit at the Juventus superstar for reacting angrily after Diogo Jota failed to pass the ball to him in their opening Group F match against Hungary at the ongoing Euro 2020 on Tuesday. Ronaldo scored two of Portugal’s three goals on the night to put them top of the group after France beat Germany by a lone goal.
