Update: White Soldier Filmed Harassing a Black Man is Charged with third-degree Assault and Battery

A white US Army officer who was filmed harassing a Black man for taking a walk in his neighbourhood in Columbia, South Carolina, has been charged with third-degree assault and battery, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department. Jonathan Pentland, a 42-year-old sergeant first class assigned to Fort Jackson, was arrested at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. If found guilty, Pentland faces a $500 fine and 30 days in jail. "The first time I saw the video, it was terrible," Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said at a press conference Wednesday evening. "It was unnecessary. It was a bad video -- young man was the victim, the individual that was arrested was the aggressor, and he's been dealt with accordingly." The incident took...

Crowds of mourners and protesters gathered in a Minnesota city where the family of a 20-year-old man say he was shot by police before getting back into his car and driving away, then crashing several blocks away. The family of Daunte Wright said he was later pronounced dead. The death sparked protests in Brooklyn Center into the early hours of Monday morning as Minneapolis was already on edge and midway through the trial of the first of four police officers in the killing of George Floyd. Brooklyn Center is a city of about 30,000 people located on the northwest border of Minneapolis. Shoprite Workers Embark On Protests In Ibadan, Shut Down Company Indefinitely

Shoprite workers at Ring Road branch, Ibadan, on Friday, embarked on another round of protest, shutting down the company indefinitely. The workers, under the aegis of National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees (NUSDE), vowed that the company would remain shut until management acceded to their demands. The chairman, NUSDE, Shoprite branch, Mr Williams Peter, said the union was using the Easter period to press home its demands since dialogue had failed. He stated that all Shoprite stores had been shut down nationwide because the negotiation between the union and the management had been deadlocked. Peter attributed the indefinite strike to the alleged refusal of the management to meet up with the demands of the union. He said that although the planned transfer of Sho...

A report from The Guardian showed a damning picture of working conditions and stated that more than 6,500 migrant workers have died in the Gulf State. Gombe State Government Appoints Danladi Sanusi As Mai Tangale, Despite Protests

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has appointed Malam Danladi Sanusi Maiyamba as the Mai Tangale. The vacant stool was occasioned by the death of Dr. Abdu Buba Mausharu, the 15th Mai Tangale and only Christian monarch in the North-East, last month. The selection process turned violent with three persons killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State as the crisis over the appointment of a new Mai Tangale deepened. The residents and indigenes several times insisted on the choice of Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba, a position the State Government isn't very comfortable with, instead preferring a Muslim, as alleged. To forestall further crisis, the Gombe State Government had declared a curfew and suspended the appoint...

Premier League Drops Referee Lee Mason for this Weekend’s Fixtures

The Premier League has confirmed that referee Lee Mason will not take charge of any of this weekend’s games. Mason, 49, was at the centre of controversy last Saturday, during West Brom’s 1-0 victory over Brighton at the Hawthorns. He disallowed a Lewis Dunk free-kick, despite blowing his whistle for play to restart. It led to mass protests from the Brighton players and resulted in heavy criticism. Mason, who was due to be the fourth official for Liverpool’s game at Sheffield United 24 hours later, was then withdrawn, due to a ‘calf injury. That has again been cited as the reason for his lack of involvement this weekend.

Facebook Bans Myanmar Military Accounts From its Platforms, Citing Coup

Facebook has banned the Myanmar military from using its Facebook and Instagram platforms with immediate effect, as weeks of mass demonstrations continue in the Southeast Asian country after the military seized power. “Events since the February 1 coup, including deadly violence, have precipitated a need for this ban,” Facebook said in a blog post on Thursday, February 25. “We believe the risks of allowing the Tatmadaw (Myanmar army) on Facebook and Instagram are too great.” The army seized power earlier this month after alleging fraud in a Nov. 8 election swept by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD), detaining her and other party officials.
